NFL Legend Darrell Green Eyes Gold with Team USA Flag Football
Darrell Green, a name synonymous with speed and excellence in the NFL, isn’t slowing down at 66. The Hall of Famer has traded his helmet for a flag, embarking on a new challenge: earning a spot on the 2026 U.S. flag football squad. Green is currently participating in national team trials in Chula Vista, California, with his sights set on the World Championships in Germany this August.
A Legacy of Competition
Green’s illustrious NFL career spanned two decades, culminating in two Super Bowl victories with the Washington Commanders. A four-time All-Pro and seven-time Pro Bowler, he was also honored as a member of the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. But for Green, the competitive spirit doesn’t fade with retirement. He’s driven by the thrill of competition and the chance to represent his country.
“There’s nothing like getting on that field and competing on behalf of this country,” Green shared via USA Football’s Instagram page. “And then topping that off standing on that top podium getting that gold [medal]. I’ve done it in track in college and high school; I’ve been in Super Bowls, this is the granddaddy of them all.”
Qualifying for the Trials
According to Callie Brownson, USA Football’s senior director of high performance and national teams, Green’s impressive performance in a digital combine paved the way for his invitation to the trials. “He’s a rare athlete who has stayed in shape and is ready to compete this week,” Brownson stated via The Associated Press. His dedication to physical fitness is clearly paying off.
Team USA’s Dominance in Flag Football
Green faces stiff competition, but he’s aiming to join a team with a proven track record. The U.S. men’s national flag football team has dominated the IFAF World Championships, securing six titles in the last seven tournaments since 2010. The program’s success is a testament to the growing popularity and skill level within the sport.
The rise of flag football is undeniable. The International Olympic Committee approved flag football for inclusion in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics in October 2023, further solidifying its place on the global stage. The NFL has also responded, voting to fund and launch a professional flag football league, offering support to players who participate in the LA Games.
A New Chapter for a Legend
Green approaches these trials with characteristic determination. “Don’t feel sorry for me, don’t feel bad for me. I’m a competitor just like everybody else and I’m gonna give it my best and walk away with my head up, either way,” he declared. Whether he makes the team or not, Darrell Green’s pursuit of excellence continues to inspire.
Before his NFL career, Green excelled in track and field at Texas A&I University, earning All-America honors in 1981 and 1982. This athletic background undoubtedly contributes to his continued success and competitive drive.
