Sharks vs Predators: Playoff Hopes Hang in the Balance

The San Jose Sharks are facing a critical juncture in their season. With time rapidly dwindling, every game carries immense weight as they fight to secure a playoff berth. Their upcoming clash against the Nashville Predators on Tuesday at Bridgestone Arena is arguably their most important game of the year so far.

A Tight Race for the Wild Card

Currently, the Sharks find themselves on the outside looking in, losers of four straight and stuck at 70 points. They trail the Predators by five points for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference, though they do have two games in hand. The Edmonton Oilers are also within reach, seven points ahead in the Pacific Division with three games in hand. A victory against Nashville could inject much-needed momentum into their playoff push.

However, a regulation loss could severely damage their chances, potentially dropping them further out of contention. As of Monday, Moneypuck.com gives the Sharks just a 15.8% chance of making the playoffs, highlighting the urgency of the situation.

Coach Warsofsky Emphasizes Relaxed Focus

Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky acknowledges the importance of the game but stresses the need for a relaxed and focused approach. “Everyone knows it’s an important game,” Warsofsky said. “But again, we’ve just got to play, and we’ve got to compete and do the things that we do well, more consistently than we’ve been doing, and the rest will take care of itself.”

Injured Players Returning to the Lineup

There’s a glimmer of hope for the Sharks as several injured players are nearing their return. Forwards Tyler Toffoli, Ty Dellandrea, and Igor Chernyhov, defensemen Vincent Desharnais, and goalie Yaroslav Askarov all participated in Monday’s practice.

Toffoli, the team’s third-leading scorer with 44 points, is expected to join the team during the road trip. Chernyshov and Desharnais are potential options to play against the Predators. Ryan Reaves (hand injury) is now considered week-to-week, casting doubt on his availability should the Sharks reach the playoffs.

Chernyshov has been working on a line with Macklin Celebrini and Will Smith, while Desharnais was paired with Nick Leddy during practice. Askarov, who hasn’t played since March 10th, is back as a backup to Alex Nedeljkovic.

Defensive Struggles and Offensive Drought

The Sharks have been struggling defensively, allowing 18 goals during their four-game losing streak. They’ve given up the fourth-most high-danger chances in the NHL during this period. Offensively, they’ve managed just seven even-strength goals, with key players like Celebrini, Smith, Wennberg, and Eklund failing to find the back of the net.

“Just the little details,” Toffoli said when asked about the team’s struggles. “I think a lot of our mistakes are ending up in the back of our net. Obviously, it’s a little frustrating, but (with) a couple of bounces here or there, it can go the other way. We’ve just got to stick with it.”

Remembering Jessi Pierce

The Sharks organization also expressed their condolences to the family of Jessi Pierce, an NHL reporter who tragically passed away in a house fire. Warsofsky remembered Pierce as a “lovely person” and expressed his sympathy for her family.
