Seth Lugo: A Rising Star Represents Puerto Rico
Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Seth Lugo is set to take the mound for Puerto Rico in their opening game of the World Baseball Classic against Colombia. This isn’t Lugo’s first time representing his heritage on the international stage, but this appearance carries a special significance for the 36-year-old veteran.
From Shreveport to the Majors
Born in Shreveport, Louisiana, Lugo’s roots trace back to his paternal grandfather, Jose “Ben Lugo,” who was born in San German, Puerto Rico. Ben Lugo served in the Air Force, married a woman from Arkansas, and ultimately settled in Shreveport. Seth’s journey began at Parkway High School and continued at Centenary College, laying the foundation for a successful Major League Baseball career.
A Proud “QuarterRican”
Lugo’s connection to his Puerto Rican heritage is deeply personal. He’s embraced the nickname “QuarterRican,” a tribute to his background, and proudly wore it during MLB events. His first experience representing Puerto Rico in the 2017 World Baseball Classic was profoundly impactful. He recalled feeling welcomed by the team, dispelling any concerns about being perceived as the “American” player. He even excelled in that tournament, winning his first two starts against Venezuela and the United States before Puerto Rico ultimately fell to the Americans in the championship game.
All-Star Success with the Royals
Since his initial WBC appearance, Lugo has blossomed into a star. In 2024, he led MLB in starts with 33, earned a spot in the All-Star Game, and finished as a runner-up for the American League Cy Young Award. His performance led to a significant $46 million contract with the Kansas City Royals, a testament to his value and skill.
Family and the 2026 WBC
This year’s World Baseball Classic is particularly meaningful for Lugo because of his family. “The most important part for me is for my kids to experience this,” Lugo shared with the Kansas City Star. His wife, Amanda, and their two sons are in San Juan, Puerto Rico, to witness him represent his father’s heritage. His father, Ben, will also be in attendance.
Lugo anticipates a unique and personal experience, noting the strong sense of camaraderie within the team and the exceptional accommodations provided by MLB for players and their families. He’ll be facing fellow MLB veteran Jose Quintana on the mound.
