Sandro Mamukelashvili: Finding His Flourish in Toronto
The Toronto Raptors have discovered a gem in Sandro Mamukelashvili, the 26-year-old Georgian forward who is experiencing a true breakout season. Beyond his undeniable skills and the coaching staff’s confidence, a key ingredient to his success lies in his ability to find balance and enjoyment outside the demanding world of professional basketball.

A City That Inspires
Mamukelashvili’s connection with Toronto extends far beyond the court. He’s embraced the city’s diverse culinary scene, frequenting Georgian restaurants that remind him of home (“meat, a lot of agricultural food, beets, eggplant, a lot of walnuts,” he describes). He’s also captivated by Toronto’s natural beauty and cultural offerings. From exploring the lakefront and its charming pier to immersing himself in the city’s museums, he’s found a haven for rejuvenation.
“I would say it definitely does help your basketball,” Mamukelashvili shared during the Raptors’ road trip. “You are locked in and focused (on the season) but at the same time, sometimes you can let it go and then just enjoy things.” This ability to disconnect and recharge is proving crucial to his performance.
A Family Foundation of Curiosity
Mamukelashvili’s broad worldview isn’t a recent development. It’s rooted in a family that prioritized intellectual curiosity and diverse interests. His mother, Marianna Oakley, is an art history professor, and his father, Zurab Mamukelashvili, encouraged a wide range of passions during his upbringing. His brother, David, is a philosopher, and his aunt, Eteri Andjaparidze, is a Grammy-nominated classical pianist and university professor.
Growing up in Tbilisi, Georgia, wasn’t solely focused on sports. “It was an upbringing where they used to always tell us to be interested in something more than just your stuff, you know?” he explained. “When you’re growing up, you might be like, ‘Oh, why are they doing this?’ but if you make it fun, I think it’s really cool… The more you grow up, the more fun it gets.”
Finding a Home in Toronto
After stints with Milwaukee and San Antonio, Mamukelashvili has found a true fit with the Raptors. Signing as a free agent last summer, he initially felt some nervousness, but was quickly embraced by his teammates. “But the guys were very accepting and pushy, and they want the best for the team and for myself and to win games.”
His impact is undeniable. Averaging 10.7 points and 4.8 rebounds while shooting 36.5% from three-point range in 68 games, Mamukelashvili’s role has expanded significantly. He’s eager to experience the intensity of the playoffs, having only observed from the sidelines as a rookie with Milwaukee in 2022.
“I went to playoffs (as a rookie with Milwaukee in 2022) but I was on a two-way so I didn’t even suit up,” he recalled. “Since that day I’ve been like, ‘I want to make the playoffs, I want to go out there,’ and it’s a perfect time because for four years, I’ve envisioned this moment. Hopefully we can kind of keep pushing it, keep pushing and make it.”
Toronto: A Sanctuary for Focus
The pressure of a playoff run is new territory for most of the Raptors roster, and how they handle it will be critical. Fortunately, Toronto offers a wealth of distractions to help maintain balance. “When I’m mentally tired, there are so many other things to do,” Mamukelashvili said. “It’s a great city. I really enjoyed it.”
