Roman Anthony: The Rising Star Turning Heads at the World Baseball Classic
Team USA unexpectedly benefited from an opportunity when Corbin Carroll suffered a broken hamate bone last month, and that opportunity has shone a spotlight on Boston Red Sox outfielder Roman Anthony. Anthony has quickly become a key player for Team USA throughout the World Baseball Classic, particularly in the past week.
He launched a crucial three-run homer against Mexico on Monday, followed by the game-winning homer against the Dominican Republic on Sunday. These performances are particularly impressive considering Anthony is only 21 years old and participating in his first World Baseball Classic.
What Makes Roman Anthony ‘Special’?
On Monday, Team USA manager Mark DeRosa shared his insights on what sets Anthony apart during his appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show.” DeRosa emphasized Anthony’s composure and ability to thrive under pressure.
“Roman Anthony is special and the moment is never too big for him..Red Sox fans are gonna have a nice time with him for the next fifteen years” ~ @markdero7#PMSLivepic.twitter.com/8o3RhMIQpM

“Special relationship with him,” DeRosa stated. “Special. 21 years old, to come in and handle himself the way he has. The quality of at-bats, the way the moment’s not too big for him, starting every game…he’s been carrying us. Yeah, you’re gonna have a nice 15 years, a nice time in Boston with this dude.”
Anthony isn’t just the youngest player on Team USA; he’s also the youngest player to ever hit a home run in the semifinal or final of a WBC game. What makes this even more remarkable is that this is Anthony’s first experience in a high-stakes environment like this. He’s never played in an All-Star Game, an MLB playoff game, or a WBC before.
A Future Boston Star?
Despite being a newcomer to this level of competition, Anthony has consistently risen to the occasion and made a significant impact on the tournament. Regardless of the outcome of Tuesday’s final, he’s already left his mark. Red Sox fans have reason to be excited about the potential of this young talent.
