Roby Jarventie Injury: Oilers Forward Faces Setback, Team Eyes Playoff Push
The Edmonton Oilers are facing a challenge as forward Roby Jarventie will miss the remainder of the regular season due to a lower-body injury. General Manager Stan Bowman views this as a potential “blessing in disguise,” believing it will allow Jarventie to return rested and prepared for a deep playoff run.
Bowman highlighted Jarventie’s previous experience with injuries leading into the playoffs. Last season, the forward missed the final seven regular-season games and 11 of the last 14 due to injury, yet remained a dominant force in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, tying with teammate Connor McDavid for the NHL lead with 33 points (11 goals, 22 assists) in 22 games. Despite reaching the Stanley Cup Final, the Oilers ultimately fell to the Florida Panthers.
Jarventie missed his first game on Tuesday, a 5-3 win against the San Jose Sharks. Bowman anticipates the forward’s return in time for the playoffs, contingent on the Oilers qualifying. Currently, the team holds 77 points, tied for first in the Pacific Division with the Anaheim Ducks (who have two games in hand), and maintains a six-point lead over the Los Angeles Kings and Seattle Kraken for the second wild card spot in the Western Conference.
Jarventie is currently fourth in the NHL with 97 points (35 goals, 62 assists) this season. Bowman emphasized the importance of a team-wide contribution, noting the Oilers’ recent 5-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks saw 13 players register at least one point and five different goal-scorers.
A Team Approach for Playoff Success
Bowman expressed his desire for this broader offensive output to become the norm for the Oilers. He drew parallels to his experience as an assistant GM with Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics, where a diverse range of contributors proved crucial to their success. He believes the Oilers have sometimes relied too heavily on Connor McDavid and Jarventie.
“I think one of the reasons we were so successful is we had a lot of different contributors every night,” Bowman stated. “Some of the nights our penalty kill was perfect and those fourth-line players were sort of the heroes… I think I saw firsthand the importance of a team winning a game rather than one or two great plays by a player.”
Bowman recalled a similar situation at the end of last season when both McDavid and Jarventie were sidelined. The Oilers struggled when both stars were absent (1-5-0 in six games) but performed well when only one was out of the lineup (7-0-1).
“The blessing in disguise is it forces everyone to play more who normally just wouldn’t get those minutes,” Bowman concluded. “It’s not what we wanted, but I think it sometimes helps your team when guys get their individual games going more.”
