PGA Leaderboard Today: Scheffler and McIlroy Survive the Cut at THE PLAYERS
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – The pressure was on at TPC Sawgrass as two of the PGA TOUR’s biggest stars, Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, found themselves battling to make the cut at THE PLAYERS Championship. A weekend off was looming for both players, but they managed to claw their way to survival.
The last time both McIlroy and Scheffler missed the cut in the same event was the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship. Fortunately for fans, a repeat was avoided this week, as both finished at 1-over, just inside the cut line.
A Tale of Two Finishes
McIlroy carded a 71, while Scheffler shot a 73. Both players navigated the challenging course in different ways to secure their place in the weekend rounds.
McIlroy’s fortunes turned on the par-5 ninth, where a two-putt from 31 feet for birdie provided crucial breathing room. Scheffler, meanwhile, found himself on the cutline after late bogeys on the 14th and 16th holes. However, he demonstrated his skill by safely navigating the infamous island green 17th and then sticking his approach on the 18th, sinking the putt for a closing birdie.
“It would have sucked to be going home this afternoon,” McIlroy admitted, “so to hang around and hopefully play two more days, that’s a win.”
Battling Through Challenges
While both players made the cut, their experiences differed. McIlroy is still working his way back to full form after a recent back injury. Making the weekend was a significant step in his recovery process, even if he faces a double-digit deficit heading into the third round.
Scheffler, visibly frustrated throughout his round, likely has higher expectations. He didn’t speak to the media after his round, but his body language spoke volumes.
McIlroy’s Road to Recovery
McIlroy has adjusted his expectations for his title defense at TPC Sawgrass. While contending remains a possibility, his primary goal is to play through the tournament healthy. He spent the early part of the week receiving treatment for back spasms that forced him to withdraw from the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard.
Despite limited practice, McIlroy’s long game has remained surprisingly sharp, ranking inside the top five in driving distance and top 25 in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee. The short game, however, has been a struggle, exacerbated by his injury and rust. He found it difficult to make putts, particularly from shorter distances.
“I felt like I played well enough today to be up the leaderboard,” he said. “I just couldn’t get a putt to drop.”
Notable Misses
While McIlroy and Scheffler survived, others weren’t so lucky. Ben Griffin (4-over) led the group of notable players who missed the cut, along with Jake Knapp (3-over), Shane Lowry (5-over), Joel Dahmen (6-over), and Tom Hoge (9-over). Hoge had a particularly difficult day, carding a 9 on the par-4 seventh hole after a series of unfortunate shots.
