Peyton Watson: A Resilient Return to the Court

Considering the impressive season Peyton Watson was having before his hamstring injury in February, his return last weekend carried significant expectations – his own, to be precise. Even a minor mishap, like accidentally losing his shoe mid-game, couldn’t shake his confidence. Watson swiftly retrieved his sneaker, discarded it, and continued playing, demonstrating a remarkable composure.

“I feel like I’m right back where I was six weeks ago,” Watson stated after his first game back from a right hamstring strain. “The confidence is there. Everything is there. Handle was a little loose tonight. I was winded. The altitude kicked my butt. But I think other than that, everything else is amazing. … I have complete confidence in my game.”

Impactful Performance Despite Imperfections

Watson’s return wasn’t flawless, but it was undeniably impactful. He contributed 14 points, 6 rebounds, and 3 assists in a 128-112 win over the Trail Blazers. While some of his 13 field goal attempts missed the mark, he was clearly working to regain the rhythm he’d established in January, when he was playing some of the best basketball of his career.

His emergence as a key playmaker during Nikola Jokic’s absence was a defining story of the season for the Nuggets. His impending restricted free agency adds another layer to his narrative. The Nuggets felt the impact of his absence, along with that of Aaron Gordon, as they slipped in the standings.

Adversity Builds Character

“I think it’s good to get punched in the mouth sometimes,” Watson reflected. “I think that we needed that. That gives us a different level of grind, a chip on our shoulder, and it gave us some humility, too, which is what you need. Especially when you’ve got a squad as well-rounded as ours. I think that you need some adversity to kind of build a team up, and I mean, that’s what this year has been.”

Sunday’s game marked the Nuggets’ first with a fully available rotation since November 12th, and the first time Jokic, Gordon, and Watson all played together since November 22nd. However, they aren’t quite at full strength yet. Gordon’s minutes are still limited, and Watson’s were capped at 20 against Portland.

Looking Ahead: Ramp-Up and Expectations

Jokic acknowledged Watson’s need for time to fully regain his form. “Like everybody, he will need some time, but it’s good to have him back,” Jokic said. “I think he’s gonna (need) a lot of time to get back to shape—not shape, but like playing shape. He missed a lot of time. … He did good. But I think he will need more time to get back to how he played before.”

Watson, however, remains optimistic, drawing on his experience recovering from a previous hamstring strain in September 2024. He believes he’s on track for a swift return to form. He pointed out Jokic’s relatively short absence compared to his own, and the greater responsibility Jokic carries.

Watson explained that this hamstring injury presented unique challenges due to its location, making strengthening and regaining movement more difficult. He missed 19 games, slightly longer than the initial estimate.

Before the injury, Watson was averaging 22.2 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.8 assists over an 18-game stretch, earning him Western Conference Player of the Week honors. His absence was keenly felt.

Integrating Watson Back into the Offense

The Nuggets intend to integrate Watson back into the offense, allowing him to handle the ball, operate in the pick-and-roll, and attack from the wing, not just to satisfy him, but to alleviate pressure on other ball-handlers like Jamal Murray. He already showcased this versatility against the Trail Blazers, playing alongside Jokic when Murray was on the bench.

“Even when I first got injured, the coaches never, ever forgot about me,” Watson said. “They always, every day, asked me how I felt. They talked to me about ways they couldn’t wait to implement me when I got back into the lineup, and just ways they were gonna utilize me once the team was fully healthy. You saw today, like, DA had no hesitance putting the ball in my hand. Jok had no hesitance putting the ball in my hand. And that really did a lot for my confidence.”

Watson’s resilience and determination are clear. He’s eager to contribute to the Nuggets’ success, and his return solidifies their position as a formidable team. Learn more about Peyton Watson on NBA.com.
