New York Jets Draft Buzz: Could WR Carnell Tate Be the Surprise Pick?
For months, the New York Jets’ 2026 NFL Draft strategy has revolved around bolstering the front-seven. Names like Arvell Reese, Rueben Bain Jr., and David Bailey have dominated the conversation. Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles has also emerged as a potential game-changer. However, a surprising possibility is gaining traction: the Jets might pivot to offense, and specifically, address the glaring need at wide receiver.
Beyond the Defensive Line: A Receiver-Focused Approach?
While quarterback isn’t on the immediate radar – Alabama’s Ty Simpson remains a long shot for a top-10 pick – the receiver position is screaming for reinforcements. Garrett Wilson is a bona fide star, but he can’t carry the passing offense alone. The current supporting cast, including Isaiah Williams and Adonai Mitchell, simply doesn’t provide enough reliable options.

Carnell Tate: The Dark Horse Candidate
Carnell Tate is widely considered one of the top three receivers in the draft, lauded for his safety and well-rounded profile. He posted impressive numbers in 2025, racking up 875 yards and nine touchdowns while playing alongside Jeremiah Smith. Tate excels at making contested catches, thanks to his exceptional 94th-percentile hand size (6’2″, 192 pounds).
While not a blazing speedster, Tate possesses enough athleticism to create separation and contribute on deep routes and underneath plays. He’d allow the Jets to utilize Wilson more effectively and improve their red-zone efficiency.
Daniel Jeremiah spoke to Mina Kimes about the possibility of Tate going as high as No. 2. “I think Tate, I think he’s in play at two,” Jeremiah said. “I think that conversation is entertained at two.”

What’s Holding Tate Back?
Some scouts believe Tate’s draft stock could be higher if he weighed 205 pounds instead of 192 and ran a 4.42 40-yard dash instead of a 4.53. However, in a draft class lacking a clear-cut franchise quarterback and a dominant defensive prospect, the opportunity cost of selecting a receiver is significantly lower.
A Promising Fit for the Jets
Tate would be entering a favorable situation with the Jets, playing alongside a proven star in Garrett Wilson and benefiting from a potentially improved offensive scheme under a new quarterback. While not a guaranteed pick, the possibility of Tate being selected at #2 is gaining momentum.
