Monte Carlo Open: Joao Fonseca Shocks Berrettini, Reaches Quarterfinals!

Joao Fonseca has made a stunning breakthrough at the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters, reaching the quarterfinals for the first time in his career. The 19-year-old Brazilian delivered a commanding performance, overcoming former champion Matteo Berrettini 6-3, 6-2 on Thursday.

Playing in front of a vibrant crowd on Court des Princes, Fonseca showcased exceptional shot-making and unwavering intensity. He consistently found advantageous angles, putting immense pressure on Berrettini, who had previously upset Daniil Medvedev in the second round with a dominant 6-0, 6-0 victory.

“It is super special. I was looking for this result for a long time,” Fonseca shared after the match. “Of course I want more. I am very confident and focused. I was very happy with the way I fought today. From the beginning, putting a lot of pressure. Playing huge return games and very good serve games. I was putting a lot of pressure and that helps you stay more calm during the match.”

Fonseca’s dominance was evident in the statistics, winning 94% of his first-serve points in the opening set. Even a momentary setback at the start of the second set couldn’t derail his momentum. While Berrettini briefly leveled the score at 2-2 with a powerful forehand, Fonseca quickly regained control, ultimately securing the victory in 75 minutes.

A Historic Run for Brazilian Tennis

Fonseca’s quarterfinal appearance marks a significant milestone for Brazilian tennis. He is the first Brazilian to reach this stage of a Masters 1000 tournament since Thomaz Bellucci in Madrid in 2011. Furthermore, he is the youngest player to reach the quarterfinals in Monte-Carlo since Rafael Nadal and Richard Gasquet achieved the feat in 2005.

This debut appearance in Monte-Carlo has also propelled Fonseca up the PIF ATP Live Rankings, moving him up five spots to No. 35. His head-to-head record with Berrettini now stands at 1-1.

Next Up: A Clash with Alexander Zverev

Fonseca will now face a formidable challenge in the quarterfinals: third seed Alexander Zverev. Zverev advanced to the last eight after defeating Zizou Bergs 6-2, 7-5, securing his place in the Monte-Carlo quarterfinals for the first time since 2022.

Zverev acknowledged the improvement in his performance compared to his opening-round match. “[It was] a better match from my side,” he stated. “It was still not perfect. Still far from the level I played in the US, but this is my first clay tournament… I am happy with the level today. We move forward.”

Zverev, currently ranked No. 3 in the PIF ATP Rankings, is aiming for his eighth Masters 1000 title. He anticipates a tough battle against Fonseca, noting the Brazilian’s prowess on clay. “I think clay is his best surface,” Zverev commented. “He won Buenos Aires and has played well on the surface before. I am excited to play him for the first time. He is a young upcoming talent and I think we will play each other a lot more in the next couple of years.”

Rising Stars Shine

Interestingly, Fonseca is the second player born in 2006 to reach the quarterfinals of an ATP Masters 1000 event, joining Martin Landaluce, who achieved the same feat in Miami last month. This highlights the emergence of a new generation of talented players on the ATP Tour.
