Milano Cortina 2026: Men’s Curling Standings & Key Matchups

The ice is heating up at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games, and the men’s curling competition is delivering thrilling moments. Let’s dive into the latest results and standings from the recent round-robin sessions.

People’s Republic of China Secures First Victory

The People’s Republic of China celebrated their first round-robin win against hosts Italy in a decisive match. Italy, with the hammer in the first end, attempted to establish control, but a strategic build-up from the Chinese team resulted in two counting stones. A take-out attempt by Italian skip Joel Retornaz only removed one stone, allowing China to steal the first point.

China continued their momentum, stealing two more points in the second end and another in the third, building a commanding 4-0 lead. Italy finally responded in the fourth, scoring two points, but China answered with a game-changing four-point score in the fifth. Xu Xiaoming, the Chinese skip, executed a brilliant promotion take-out, removing an Italian stone and leaving three Chinese stones scoring.

Despite a two-point score by Italy in the sixth, China responded with three in the seventh, extending their lead to 11-4. Italy conceded in the eighth, handing China their well-deserved first win.

“Firstly, everyone is so excited, especially today as it’s the Chinese New Year,” said People’s Republic of China’s skip Xu Xiaoming. “We got our first win beating Italy on home ice with a large crowd cheering for them. It’s a lot of pressure on our side, but we just kept calm, focussed on our performance and won the game.”

Germany Keeps Semi-Final Hopes Alive

Germany kept their semi-final aspirations alive with a 7-3 victory over the 2022 Olympic champions, Sweden. Notably, Sweden’s Niklas Edin became the curler with the most Olympic games played, surpassing John Shuster of the United States.

Germany took an early lead with a double take-out by skip Marc Muskatewitz in the third end. Sweden leveled the score, but Germany maintained a narrow advantage through the fifth. A strategic steal in the sixth end extended Germany’s lead to 4-2. After trading singles, Germany secured another steal in the ninth, and ultimately won the game 7-3 when Edin’s final attempt to score went awry.

“It feels really good, we play the guys pretty often during a season,” said German skip Marc Muskatewitz. “The last year it’s been a little bit back-and-forth so it’s pretty nice playing against these guys. They are really gentlemen guys on the ice.”

Canada and Norway Also Secure Wins

Canada defeated Czechia 8-2, with Canada stealing multiple points and Czechia conceding in the ninth end. Norway defeated Great Britain 7-6 in a closely contested match, securing a crucial win and moving into a tie for third place in the rankings with the United States.
