Maxime Comtois: From NHL Disappointment to KHL Controversy
Quebec native Maxime Comtois’s NHL career didn’t quite reach its potential. Drafted by the Anaheim Ducks from the QMJHL, he, like many promising Quebecois players, hoped to make a significant impact. However, across 211 games with the Ducks and Carolina Hurricanes, Comtois accumulated 87 points. After seven seasons in North America, he sought a new challenge in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).
And it’s safe to say his time in the KHL has been… eventful. A recent confession to a league official revealed a concerning truth: few of Comtois’s teammates seem to enjoy playing with him. A video circulating online (see here) appears to show Comtois managing to simultaneously irritate the referee, his own head coach, and players from both teams – a remarkable feat, to say the least.
Credit to Tout sur le hockey for bringing this story to light. Despite the interpersonal issues, Comtois isn’t a liability on the ice. This season, he’s registered 34 points in 54 games, following up a strong performance last year with 50 points in 62 games. However, his fiery temperament, coupled with a penchant for trash-talking, seems to be pushing the limits of patience – not just for opponents, but for those within his own team.
A Teammate’s Plea
The teammate who spoke with the official reportedly pleaded with him not to alter his officiating style due to Comtois’s behavior. The video footage shows the coach and official engaged in a heated discussion in Russian. While Comtois couldn’t understand the conversation, his coach clearly expressed his frustration with the player.
Perhaps this is a contributing factor to why Comtois is no longer in the NHL. While an average forward, he apparently wasn’t considered a model teammate. This incident certainly won’t endear him to his agent or management.

The situation surrounding Maxime Comtois raises questions about the balance between on-ice performance and team chemistry. While his skill is undeniable, his personality appears to be creating significant friction. It remains to be seen if he can adjust his approach and find a more harmonious fit within a team environment.
