Max Verstappen Tackles the Nürburgring Nordschleife Again
Max Verstappen, the four-time Formula 1 World Champion, is set to challenge the infamous Nürburgring Nordschleife this weekend. The Dutch racing sensation will be behind the wheel of a Mercedes AMG GT3, competing in the NLS2 race. This return follows a previous outing last year and highlights Verstappen’s enduring fascination with the challenging German circuit, often dubbed the ‘Green Hell’.
A Past Ban: Marko’s Concerns
Interestingly, Verstappen’s pursuit of Nordschleife glory hasn’t always been smooth sailing. Former Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko recently revealed he once banned Verstappen from attempting a run in a Formula 1 car on the track. Marko explained the reasoning behind his decision, citing the inherent dangers of unleashing a modern F1 machine on the notoriously narrow and unforgiving circuit.
“Years ago, Max enthusiastically spoke about the Nordschleife,” Marko told F1-Insider. “He wanted to do a demo run with a Red Bull Formula 1 car. But all alarm bells went off for me at that time.”
Marko was particularly concerned after witnessing Timo Bernhard’s record-breaking lap in a Porsche 919 Hybrid Evo. “There was no question of a demo run! Max had seen that insane video in which Timo Bernhard broke the lap record. I think he wanted to beat that again with the Red Bull.”
The ‘Green Hell’ and its Allure
The Nürburgring Nordschleife, with its 20.832-kilometre (12.944 mi) length and demanding layout, is widely considered one of the most challenging tracks in motorsport. It has become increasingly popular with drivers seeking competitive opportunities outside of Formula 1, particularly in endurance and GT racing. Its minimal run-off areas and punishing barriers demand absolute precision and courage from any driver who dares to tame it.
Despite the initial ban, Verstappen has found a way to indulge his passion for the Nordschleife through GT racing. “Fortunately, he can now enjoy himself on the Nordschleife with the Mercedes GT3,” Marko commented. “However, I fear that he still has Timo Bernhard’s lap record in the back of his mind. After all, he is a driver of the old school.”
Looking Ahead
Verstappen’s continued participation in Nordschleife events demonstrates his love for the challenge and his willingness to push his limits beyond the confines of Formula 1. It will be fascinating to see how he performs this weekend and whether he can get closer to Bernhard’s seemingly untouchable lap record.
