Macklin Celebrini: A Star is Born at the Winter Olympics
SAN JOSE – San Jose Sharks center Macklin Celebrini is making waves at the Winter Olympic Games in Milan Cortina, becoming a standout player despite being the youngest on the men’s hockey team. At just 19 years old, Celebrini has quickly risen to become the second-leading scorer of the tournament, trailing only his linemate, the legendary Connor McDavid, and propelling a formidable Canadian team into the semifinals.
Sharks Teammates Unsurprised by Celebrini’s Success
Celebrini’s impressive performance isn’t shocking to his teammates back in San Jose. “He’s the best player in the world, and he’s proving it,” Sharks winger Ryan Reaves confidently stated. “That’s what the best players do.”
Dominating Performance Against Czechia
In a thrilling quarterfinal match against Czechia, Celebrini showcased his skills with a remarkable three-point performance, including a crucial primary assist on Mitch Marner’s overtime winner. The final score was 4-3 in favor of Canada. The game-winning play saw Celebrini deliver a precise drop pass to Marner, who skillfully navigated through three Czechia defenders – including former Shark Radim Simek – before scoring the decisive goal.
Semifinal Showdown Against Finland
Canada’s victory sets up a highly anticipated semifinal clash against Finland, who overcame Switzerland and Sharks forward Philipp Kurashev 3-2 in overtime. Kurashev contributed with an assist in the loss. Meanwhile, Sharks winger Pavol Regenda is also advancing to the semifinals with Slovakia, after a dominant 6-2 win over Germany, where he scored twice. Slovakia will face the United States, who edged Sweden 2-1 in overtime thanks to a goal from Minnesota Wild defenseman Quinn Hughes.
Sharks Players Express Support and Pride
Sharks defenseman Mario Ferraro expressed his support for Celebrini, stating, “Obviously, I’m rooting for Canada as a Canadian, so it’s good to see Celebrini do well. Not only is he doing well, but he’s one of the best players in the tournament.” He also believes Celebrini’s success will provide a confidence boost for the Sharks team.
Celebrini’s Impact on Canada’s Roster
Despite being in just his second NHL season, Celebrini has become an indispensable part of Canada’s roster. Entering the Olympics as the NHL’s fourth-leading scorer with 81 points in 55 games, he has continued to shine, accumulating five goals and four assists through the preliminary round and quarterfinals.
A Line for the History Books
Celebrini has been playing alongside McDavid, a three-time Hart Trophy winner, and at times, Nathan MacKinnon, creating a line that many are calling one of the most potent in Olympic history. Reaves jokingly remarked, “I thought McDavid was playing with (Celebrini), to be honest… That line is out of control.”
Breaking Records
Celebrini’s nine points in the tournament have surpassed Evgeni Malkin’s record for the most points by a teenager in a single Olympic tournament with NHL players. He has also become only the fourth player to score in four consecutive Olympic games featuring NHL players, joining hockey legends Marian Hossa, Teemu Selanne, and Mats Sundin.
Regenda Leads Slovakia to Semifinals
Pavol Regenda is also making a significant impact, leading Slovakia into the semifinals with a two-goal performance against Germany. He is tied for third in scoring for Slovakia with four points in four games. Regenda previously helped Slovakia win a Bronze Medal at the 2022 Games in Beijing.
