Luke Hughes and the New Jersey Devils: Preparing for the NHL’s Return
The New Jersey Devils were back on the ice in Newark today, diligently working through practice sessions as they prepare for the NHL schedule to resume next Wednesday. This notebook provides the latest information, updates, interviews, and videos from today’s practice, offering a glimpse into the team’s mindset and preparations.
A Focused Practice Session
Thursday’s practice was a comprehensive blend of skill development and regular practice drills. The session began with players focusing on puck touches and refining their individual techniques. The coaching staff then took the reins, implementing drills designed to reinforce team systems and strategies.
Ramping Up After the Olympic Break
Despite still being without seven players due to their participation in the Olympics, the Devils are steadily increasing the intensity of their practice sessions, approaching the resumption of play with a renewed focus. Forward Cody Glass expressed the team’s positive outlook: “It’s nice to be back, come in with a mental reset with positive vibes. We’re going to have a tough stretch coming but I feel like we’re due for the challenge.”
The Playoff Push
The Devils face a challenging climb to secure a playoff position, requiring them to make up ground in the standings. However, the team appears fully prepared to embrace the challenge. Glass emphasized a game-by-game approach: “Just taking it one game at a time. Don’t get ahead of ourselves, don’t look at how many games we have left, just focus on the next one. I think that’s going to be huge for us, because we’re going to have to win some games here. But don’t look too far into the future, don’t get ahead of ourselves.”
Upcoming Schedule
The team will continue to refine their game with three more practices scheduled before their return to action against the Buffalo Sabres next Wednesday. This game marks the first of a back-to-back series, followed by a contest in Pittsburgh the following night.

Lenni Hämeenaho Recalled
Coinciding with the end of the Olympic break and the team’s return to practice, forward Lenni Hämeenaho was recalled from the American Hockey League. While Hämeenaho didn’t see game action during the break, his recall was anticipated. He has seamlessly integrated into the NHL lineup since making his debut on January 19.
Coach Keefe on Hämeenaho’s Potential
Head coach Sheldon Keefe has been impressed with Hämeenaho’s performance, stating, “It’s been obvious that he belongs here.” Keefe highlighted the advantage of Hämeenaho’s ability to move between the NHL and AHL without requiring waivers. He also acknowledged the importance of Hämeenaho continuing to develop and adapt to the league. “It’s on him to handle himself well coming out of this break and get back going,” Keefe shared. “And we’ve got to keep working with him as a coaching staff to keep adapting to the league as the, sort of, honeymoon phase wears off.”
Keefe explained the importance of allowing prospects to mature in the AHL before making the jump to the NHL, ensuring they are fully prepared for the challenges of the league. He expressed confidence in Hämeenaho’s potential to sustain his success and avoid being sent back down to the AHL.
