Kimi Antonelli Under Fire After Collision with Isack Hadjar at Chinese GP
The Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix sprint race was marred by a controversial collision between Mercedes junior driver Kimi Antonelli and Red Bull Racing’s Isack Hadjar. The incident, which significantly impacted Hadjar’s race, has sparked debate among drivers, team principals, and fans alike.
The Collision and Its Aftermath
Hadjar, after a strong start from 10th position, had climbed to eighth place by Turn 6. However, his promising run was abruptly halted when Antonelli, seemingly struggling with understeer, collided with the side of Hadjar’s RB22, sending the Red Bull driver off track. The impact caused significant damage to Hadjar’s floor, effectively ruining his chances of a points finish.
“We wanted to understand how the soft was going to perform, and with a completely destroyed floor, we can’t work,” a frustrated Hadjar told Canal+. “I don’t understand why he’s overexcited like that when he’s got a rocketship and will recover regardless… Anyway, it happens.”
Antonelli was subsequently handed a 10-second penalty for the incident. Despite serving the penalty during a late safety car period, he managed to finish fifth, adding to his second-place result at the Melbourne opener.
Stewards’ Ruling and Mercedes’ Perspective
The stewards’ report clearly placed the blame on Antonelli, stating that he locked a rear wheel and understeered into Hadjar, denying the Red Bull driver racing space. The report concluded that Antonelli was “entirely responsible for the collision.”
However, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff offered a slightly dissenting opinion, suggesting the 10-second penalty was “relatively harsh.” He acknowledged the impact on Hadjar’s race but felt the stewards faced a difficult decision. Motorsport.com provides further details on Wolff’s comments.
Unsportsmanlike Conduct?
The incident took another turn when Antonelli attempted to apologize to Hadjar, only to be rebuffed. Wolff criticized Hadjar’s reaction as “unsportsmanlike,” stating, “That’s not how it should be – waving him away.”
