Josh Naylor to Lead Team Canada at the World Baseball Classic

Seattle Mariners slugger Josh Naylor, hailing from Mississauga, Ontario, has been appointed captain of Team Canada for the upcoming World Baseball Classic. Baseball Canada announced the exciting news on Monday, solidifying Naylor’s position as a leader both on and off the field.

A Rising Star: Josh Naylor’s Impressive Career

The 28-year-old Naylor is no stranger to accolades. He’s a two-time recipient of the prestigious Tip O’Neill Award, presented by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame to Canada’s top baseball player – winning in both 2023 and 2025. This demonstrates his consistent excellence and dedication to the sport.

Naylor’s 2025 season was a career year, split between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Mariners. He showcased a remarkable blend of power and speed, achieving a personal best of 30 stolen bases across 147 games, alongside a .295 batting average and an impressive 20 home runs.

Postseason Dominance and a New Contract

His performance reached new heights during the postseason. Naylor hit a stellar .340 in 12 games, before the Mariners faced elimination against the Toronto Blue Jays in the AL Championship Series. Against Toronto, he truly shone, launching three home runs and achieving a .417 batting average (10-for-24) over seven games.

Recognizing his value, the Mariners secured Naylor’s future with a five-year, $92.5 million contract following his outstanding 2025 campaign. This commitment underscores his importance to the team and his potential for continued success.

World Baseball Classic History and 2026 Expectations

This isn’t Naylor’s first foray into the World Baseball Classic. He previously represented Canada in 2017, though his participation was limited to two games with no hits. He unfortunately missed the 2023 tournament due to an ankle injury.

Canada will kick off its 2026 WBC journey on March 7th against Colombia. The team is determined to break new ground, aiming to advance past the first round for the first time in tournament history. Canada’s best finish to date was ninth place in the inaugural 2006 WBC.

With Josh Naylor leading the charge, Team Canada is poised to make a strong showing and inspire baseball fans across the nation. You can find more information about Team Canada and the World Baseball Classic on the official Baseball Canada website.
