John Shuster and Team USA Advance to World Men’s Curling Championship Semi-Finals
Following two captivating semi-final matches on Friday afternoon, featuring four highly competitive teams, Sweden will compete against Canada for the gold medals and championship title on Saturday afternoon at the LGT World Men’s Championship. Scotland will face the United States on Saturday morning in the bronze medal game.
Sweden earned a direct route to the semi-finals by topping the round-robin rankings. Meanwhile, Team USA, led by skip John Shuster, overcame a challenging path, defeating Switzerland 9-8 in an extra-end thriller during a morning qualification game.
USA vs. Sweden: A Nail-Biting Semi-Final
The semi-final clash between the USA and Sweden was a tense affair. In the third end, Sweden held a 2-0 lead when John Shuster had a crucial draw for two points, leveling the score at 2-2. The game remained tightly contested, tied at 3-3 in the sixth end, before Sweden skip Niklas Edin executed a precise raise to score two points and regain the lead at 5-3.
The tenth end saw Sweden with a chance to secure the win, but Edin’s final draw fell short, allowing the Americans to steal a single point and tie the game at 6-6, forcing an extra end. The Swedes ultimately controlled the extra end, winning 8-6 without needing to play their last stone.
Reflecting on the game, Sweden’s Edin stated, “I feel we had a lot of momentum there and we were a little bit ahead of them for the whole game.” He added, “But it was tight until the end, and their steal in the tenth made us a little bit nervous.” Edin also highlighted the strategic decision to allow the steal in the tenth, stating, “We knew early on in the tenth that we were in trouble, so we let them have the steal — the smart play was to just to take it in the extra.”
Canada Secures Victory Over Scotland
In the other semi-final, Scotland also earned a direct route through the round-robin rankings, while Canada advanced through a qualifier against Italy. The qualifier was a close contest, tied at 6-6 in the ninth end, when Italy’s skip Stefano Spiller attempted a take-out for a significant score, but left a Canadian stone in play, settling for a one-point lead at 7-6. Canada then capitalized in the tenth, with skip Matt Dunstone delivering a precise shot to score three points and win 9-7.
The Scotland vs. Canada semi-final was equally competitive. By the seventh end, Scotland led 5-3. Canada’s Dunstone then executed a draw into an open house for three points, taking the lead for the first time at 6-5. Scotland responded with two points in the eighth, regaining the lead at 7-6. However, Canada regained control in the ninth with a draw for two points, leading 8-6. Ultimately, Scotland couldn’t find a way to score in the tenth, giving Canada a steal of one and a 9-7 victory, sending them to their first-ever world final.
Canada’s Dunstone expressed, “That was two heavyweights going at it shot for shot by each team, but it feel great to have come through that.”
