
John Carlson Traded to Anaheim Ducks in Landmark Deal
In a significant move ahead of the trade deadline, the Anaheim Ducks have acquired veteran defenseman John Carlson from the Washington Capitals. The Ducks are sending a conditional first-round pick in either the 2026 or 2027 NHL Draft, along with a 2027 third-round selection, to Washington in exchange for the seasoned blueliner.

This season, the 36-year-old Carlson (born January 10, 1990) has recorded 10 goals and 36 assists for 46 points in 55 games with the Capitals, leading all Washington skaters in assists. He currently ranks 11th among NHL defensemen in both points and assists.
Drafted by Washington in the first round (27th overall) of the 2008 NHL Draft, Carlson has amassed an impressive 166 goals and 605 assists for a total of 771 points in 1,143 career games over 17 seasons (2009-10 to 2025-26). His 771 career points place him 24th all-time among NHL defensemen and fifth among active players in the league.

Carlson holds numerous franchise records for the Capitals, including leading all-time Capitals defensemen in goals, assists, points, and power-play points (273). He ranks second in appearances and plus/minus, third in assists, and fifth in points among all Capitals skaters.

Anaheim has the option to transfer its 2026 first-round pick instead of its 2027 pick, notifying Washington after the draft pick selection preceding Anaheim’s first-round selection in the 2026 NHL Draft.
