Jays Spring Training Update: Rays Edge Out Toronto in Close Contest

PORT CHARLOTTE – February 27, 2026 – The Toronto Blue Jays faced a tough challenge in their spring training matchup against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday, ultimately falling short in a 6-5 defeat. Despite a spirited comeback attempt, the Rays proved too strong, leaving the Jays with a 1-5-1 record in spring training.

Lauer’s Rough Start & Rays’ Early Lead

Toronto starter Eric Lauer experienced a challenging outing, conceding three runs in just 1 2/3 innings pitched. He struggled to find his rhythm early, allowing singles to the first two batters he faced. The situation worsened when he hit Jake Fraley with a pitch, loading the bases. Tampa Bay capitalized on the opportunity with a two-run single from Junior Caminero and a sacrifice fly by Cedric Mullins.

Lauer managed to regain composure, retiring the next four batters before being replaced by Connor Larkin. However, the early damage had been done, giving the Rays a significant advantage.

Blue Jays Fight Back, But Fall Short

Toronto managed to get on the board in the second inning with an RBI single from Leo Jiménez. However, the Rays quickly responded, extending their lead. Mullins launched a home run in the third, and Logan Davidson added a sacrifice fly in the fourth, pushing the score to 5-1 in favour of Tampa Bay.

The Blue Jays demonstrated resilience in the eighth inning, mounting a four-run rally to tie the game. Rafael Lantigua contributed an RBI single, while two runs scored on a fielding error by Ryan Vilade. Arjun Nimmala further fueled the comeback with an RBI double.

Unfortunately, the tie was short-lived. Vilade hit a decisive sacrifice fly off Jorge Alcala, securing the 6-5 victory for the Rays.

Looking Ahead

The Blue Jays (1-5-1) will split their squad for Saturday’s games. One team will travel to Tampa to face the New York Yankees, while the other will host the Philadelphia Phillies in Dunedin. Fans eager to follow the team’s progress can find more information on the official MLB website.
