Jaylin Williams Injury Update: Thunder Forward Suffers Lower Back Contusion

The Oklahoma City Thunder faced a challenging Monday matinee against the Cleveland Cavaliers, entering the game already shorthanded. All-NBA swingman Jalen Williams is currently sidelined with a right hamstring strain, and Isaiah Hartenstein remains out due to a right soleus strain. Adding to the team’s woes, rookies Nikola Topic and Thomas Sorber have yet to make their debuts.

Thunder Build Early Lead, Then Face Injury Concerns

Despite the absences, the OKC Thunder started strong, building a 17-point lead in the first half thanks to a dominant 16-6 run. The team showcased impressive shooting, knocking down ten three-pointers at a 45% clip. Their defense also proved effective, holding Cleveland to 35% shooting from the field and 22% from beyond the arc, while forcing nine first-half turnovers.

Jaylin Williams Exits Game with Injury

However, the first half took a concerning turn when starting forward Jaylin Williams left the game after just eight minutes of action. Williams, who received a spot start against Cleveland’s double-big lineup due to Hartenstein’s injury, attempted a powerful dunk against Cavaliers’ shot-blocker Jarrett Allen. Allen rejected the attempt, causing Williams to fall awkwardly and land hard on his neck.

The Arkansas product immediately headed to the locker room and was subsequently ruled out for the remainder of the game. The Oklahoma City Thunder have officially announced that Williams is suffering from a lower back contusion. This is a significant blow to the Thunder, who rely on Williams’ versatility and energy.

Caruso Also Leaves the Game

Adding to the Thunder’s injury woes, defensive standout Alex Caruso also exited the game in the second quarter. Caruso stepped on Lu Dort’s foot, resulting in an awkward landing and a hobbled exit to the locker room. Like Williams, Caruso did not return to the contest, and is currently listed as dealing with right groin soreness. The extent of his injury remains unclear.

Looking Ahead for the Thunder

The Oklahoma City Thunder will conclude their four-game road trip in Milwaukee on Wednesday, facing the Bucks. They will then return home to the Paycom Center on Friday night for a highly anticipated NBA Finals rematch against the Indiana Pacers. The team will need to navigate these injuries as they continue their 2025-26 campaign.
