Javon Hargrave Joins the Green Bay Packers
GREEN BAY, Wis. – March 11, 2026 – The Green Bay Packers have addressed a critical need on their defensive front, agreeing to terms with former Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Javon Hargrave. This move provides significant reinforcement for new defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon as he prepares for his first season with the team.
Contract Details
According to agent Drew Rosenhaus, Hargrave has signed a two-year contract worth $23 million, with $13 million guaranteed in the first year. This acquisition comes shortly after the Packers traded defensive tackle Colby Wooden to the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for linebacker Zaire Franklin, highlighting the team’s focus on strengthening both lines.
Familiar Territory for Gannon
The signing is particularly noteworthy because of Gannon’s prior relationship with Hargrave. Gannon, formerly the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals, served as the Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator during two of Hargrave’s three seasons in Philadelphia (2021-2022). During that period, Hargrave was a disruptive force, accumulating a combined 18.5 sacks and 104 tackles. This familiarity is expected to facilitate a quick integration into the Packers’ defensive scheme.
Hargrave’s Recent History
Hargrave was officially released by the Vikings on Wednesday. He joined Minnesota last year on a two-year deal following a torn right triceps that prematurely ended his 2024 season with the San Francisco 49ers. While he started all 15 games for the Vikings at age 33, he recorded 3.5 sacks and carried a significant cap hit of $21.7 million for the 2026 season.
A Proven Veteran
Drafted in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers, Javon Hargrave has established himself as a consistent and productive defensive tackle over ten seasons. He boasts a career total of 49 sacks and has earned two Pro Bowl selections, demonstrating his impact and longevity in the league. His experience will be invaluable to a Packers defensive line looking to improve its pass rush.
Impact on the Packers Defense
Gannon replaced Jeff Hafley, who accepted the head coaching position with the Miami Dolphins. Bringing in Hargrave allows Gannon to implement his defensive philosophy with a player he knows well and trusts. The Packers are hoping Hargrave can rediscover the form he showed in Philadelphia and become a key component of their defensive success.
