Jamal Murray: From Prospect to NBA All-Star
The Denver Nuggets’ success story wouldn’t be complete without acknowledging the remarkable ascent of Jamal Murray. While Nikola Jokic rightfully receives much of the acclaim, Murray’s evolution has been pivotal, transforming him from a promising young guard into a cornerstone of a championship team. Many within the Nuggets organization recognized his potential long before the rest of Denver did.
Early Recognition: A Star in the Making
Alex English, the Nuggets’ all-time leading scorer, vividly remembers witnessing a Canadian high school guard dominate at a showcase event. “Murray outshined everybody,” English recalls, confident he was watching a future NBA star. “I can’t remember all the other players,” he admits, “but I remember Jamal Murray.”
Dan Issel, a devout follower of Kentucky Wildcats basketball, was equally impressed with Murray’s talent even before the Nuggets drafted him seventh overall in 2016. He saw the pick as a continuation of a fruitful Kentucky-to-Denver pipeline. “That makes him special in my eyes,” Issel states, adding that he actively follows former UK players in the NBA, prioritizing Murray’s games above all others.
A Unique Chemistry with Jokic
The foundation of the Nuggets’ success lies in the extraordinary partnership between Murray and Nikola Jokic. Their connection began at the 2014 Nike Hoop Summit, where they were teammates. While their initial interactions were minimal, it foreshadowed a future built on unspoken understanding. Today, their chemistry is described by Murray as “telepathic, intellectual, instinctual.”
“I think of friendship, a relationship, symmetry, an unspoken communication,” Murray shared recently. “It’s cool. It’s really cool, honestly. It’s one of the things I cherish, being in Denver and having (him) to play with.”
Ascending to Greatness: An All-Star Recognition
Murray’s recent selection as an NBA All-Star is a testament to his consistent performance and growing impact. While some might view it as a belated honor, it signifies a turning point in his career, marking the beginning of a new chapter of individual accolades. As English puts it, “It’s past due.” He emphasizes that Murray has been playing at an All-Star level for years, but Jokic’s presence often overshadowed his contributions. “He’s been the Batman sidekick, and hasn’t gotten the accolades he has overwhelmingly deserved.”
A Legacy in the Making
Murray is rapidly etching his name into Nuggets history. Currently, he ranks sixth in scoring (10,909 points), fifth in assists (2,889), seventh in games played (586), and sixth in minutes played (18,576). He also holds the franchise record for 3-pointers made (1,304) and is tied for first in championships won (one).
Franchise legends like English and Issel believe Murray’s number 27 is destined for retirement alongside the jerseys of English, Issel, David Thompson, Dikembe Mutombo, Fat Lever, and Byron Beck. English confidently states, “He’s already there…Jamal Murray certainly should be in that same group.”
Beyond Statistics: Loyalty and Sacrifice
Issel highlights Murray’s loyalty to the Nuggets, a rare quality in today’s NBA. “He seems to be very happy being a Denver Nugget,” Issel observes, contrasting Murray’s commitment with the mercenary mindset of some players. This dedication, combined with his willingness to sacrifice for the team, resonates deeply with Nuggets’ veterans.
The Batman and Robin Dynamic
The synergy between Murray and Jokic is often likened to Batman and Robin. English believes they are “like the perfect Batman and Robin duo in the NBA,” and their success is unparalleled. Murray’s ability to step up when Jokic is sidelined, as evidenced by the Nuggets’ 10-6 record during Jokic’s recent injury absence, further underscores his importance.
A Defining Partnership
Murray’s defining moments often coincide with the Nuggets’ biggest triumphs – the first playoff buzzer-beater in franchise history, a crucial defensive stop against LeBron James, a 50-point performance in a pivotal Game 6, and a 30-point triple-double in the NBA Finals.
Jokic himself acknowledges Murray’s significance, stating, “I would love it” if they could continue playing together throughout their careers. “It’s so good when you know who you’re playing with. He cannot really surprise me. I know what he can do.”
