Iowa High School Tennis Rankings 2026: A Look at the Top Teams
The Iowa Boys Tennis Coaches Association has released its initial team rankings for the highly anticipated 2026 season of Iowa boys high school tennis. Leading the charge are Waukee Northwest in Class 2A and Cedar Rapids Xavier in Class 1A, setting the stage for a competitive year on the courts.
Class 2A: Waukee Northwest Sets the Pace
Waukee Northwest enters the season as the team to beat in Class 2A. Their dominant performance last year, culminating in a state championship, has earned them the No. 1 ranking. Following closely behind are Iowa City West, Johnston, Pleasant Valley, and Linn-Mar, rounding out the Top 5. These teams are expected to provide a strong challenge throughout the season.
Class 1A: Cedar Rapids Xavier Aims for Repeat
In Class 1A, Cedar Rapids Xavier is looking to defend their state title and maintain their position at the top. They begin the season ranked No. 1, with Dubuque Wahlert Catholic, Sergeant Bluff-Luton, Decorah, and Waverly-Shell Rock completing the Top 5. The competition promises to be fierce as these teams battle for supremacy.
Recapping the 2025 Championships
Both Waukee Northwest and Cedar Rapids Xavier demonstrated their championship caliber last year. Waukee Northwest secured a 5-0 victory over both Dowling Catholic and Iowa City West before defeating Cedar Rapids Prairie 5-1 in the finals. Cedar Rapids Xavier showcased their strength by defeating Boone and Decorah, ultimately winning the championship match against Dubuque Wahlert Catholic with a score of 5-3.
New Format: Substate Team Tennis
A significant change for the 2026 Iowa boys tennis season is the introduction of substate team tennis. This new format will see the top 32 teams from each classification advance to participate. Previously, all teams entered the state tournament directly. Now, eight substates, each potentially hosting up to four teams, will compete to qualify for the state tournament. Each substate will have a designated host site for both the semifinal and final rounds.
This new structure is designed to create a more competitive and streamlined path to the state tournament, rewarding consistent performance throughout the season. Fans can expect exciting regional matchups as teams vie for a coveted spot in the state finals.
