George Foreman Laid to Rest in Scenic Northwest Iowa
SIOUX CITY, IA – Boxing legend George Foreman, a two-time heavyweight champion and cultural icon, has been laid to rest in Sioux City, Iowa, fulfilling a long-held wish. The announcement was made by Sioux City officials and members of the Foreman family, revealing a deep and enduring connection the champion had with the state.
A Lifelong Impression
According to family members, Foreman’s affinity for Iowa stemmed from a visit in 1988. He was captivated by the unique landscape, particularly the Loess Hills, and the profound sense of peace he experienced during his time in the region. He frequently spoke of the area’s beauty and tranquility, expressing a desire to be buried there.
“He never forgot Iowa,” a family representative shared. “He often described the Loess Hills with such fondness, and the peace he felt here was something he cherished.”
Honoring a Final Request
On April 17, 2025, the Foreman family traveled from Texas to honor his request, interring him at Logan Park Cemetery in Sioux City. The cemetery’s location offers a breathtaking view overlooking the Loess Hills and is situated near Stone State Park, perfectly aligning with Foreman’s vision.
“When they arrived, they immediately understood,” the family representative explained. “It looked exactly as he described.”
A Return to Remember
A year later, on April 16, 2026, the family returned to Sioux City to visit Foreman’s monument and held a press conference to express their gratitude to the city officials and the community for their support during the burial process.
“Our father lived a life of purpose, faith, and gratitude,” the family stated. “To see him laid to rest in a place that brought him such peace means everything to us.”
A Legacy of Triumph and Transformation
George Foreman’s journey to becoming a global icon began with a gold medal at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. He then ascended to the heavyweight championship in 1973, captivating audiences with his power and charisma.
After an initial retirement in 1977 and a period dedicated to his calling as an ordained minister, Foreman remarkably returned to the boxing ring in 1987. In 1994, at the age of 45, he achieved the extraordinary feat of becoming the oldest heavyweight boxing champion in history, proving his enduring athleticism and determination.
Beyond the ring, Foreman became a successful entrepreneur, most notably with the George Foreman Grill, and continued to serve as a minister, author, and sought-after public speaker.
A Lasting Impact
George Foreman passed away in March 2025, leaving behind his wife, ten children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a vast extended family. His legacy extends far beyond his accomplishments in boxing, embodying resilience, faith, and a commitment to giving back.
“Their story is a reminder of how one place can stay with someone for a lifetime,” remarked Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott in a press release. Foreman’s choice to be buried in Iowa is a testament to the enduring power of place and the lasting impact of a single, peaceful visit.
