Galatasaray vs Liverpool: Alisson Injury Blows for Reds Ahead of Champions League Clash
Liverpool’s Champions League ambitions have received an early setback with the confirmation that goalkeeper Alisson Becker will miss the first leg of their last-16 tie against Galatasaray. The Brazilian international sustained a minor injury during a training session just prior to the team’s departure for Istanbul, throwing a wrench into manager Arne Slot’s plans.
Alisson’s Injury Details
Alisson, who joined Liverpool from Roma in July 2018, reportedly felt discomfort towards the end of a training session. After consultation with the club’s medical staff, a joint decision was made to rule him out of the match at RAMS Park. While Liverpool haven’t disclosed the specifics of the injury, Arne Slot indicated it wasn’t severe enough to warrant significant concern.
“Ali, of course, was in the session as many people could see, but unfortunately he felt something towards the end of the session,” Slot explained in a press conference. “People looked at it and we decided, and he decided together, that it wasn’t good enough to play tomorrow. And then it’s of no use travelling.”
Potential Return for Tottenham Match
Despite the setback, there’s optimism surrounding Alisson’s recovery. Slot suggested there’s a “definite chance” the goalkeeper will be fit for Liverpool’s Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield on Sunday. “There’s definitely a chance, yes, because we don’t expect it to be a big thing,” Slot added. “But it was too much to be available for tomorrow.”
Mamardashvili Set to Step In
With Alisson sidelined, Giorgi Mamardashvili is expected to make his first appearance for Liverpool since the FA Cup win over Barnsley on January 12th. The Georgian goalkeeper has featured 11 times for Liverpool in all competitions this season and will be eager to prove himself on the European stage. This presents a significant opportunity for Mamardashvili to showcase his abilities and contribute to Liverpool’s Champions League campaign.
Other Team News
Alisson isn’t the only absentee for Liverpool. Italian forward Federico Chiesa has also not travelled to Istanbul due to illness, further complicating Slot’s team selection.
Looking Ahead: Galatasaray vs Liverpool
The Galatasaray vs Liverpool clash promises to be a thrilling encounter, despite Liverpool’s injury concerns. The Turkish side will be looking to capitalize on Alisson’s absence and gain a crucial advantage in the first leg. Liverpool, however, will be determined to overcome this hurdle and secure a positive result. The match is a key moment in Liverpool’s season, and the team will need to demonstrate resilience and tactical flexibility to succeed.
