Fred Hoiberg’s Nebraska Makes History: A Sweet Sixteen Berth!

In a game that will be talked about for years to come, the Nebraska Cornhuskers secured their first-ever Sweet Sixteen appearance in the NCAA Tournament, defeating Vanderbilt 82-80 in a heart-stopping contest. The victory marks a monumental achievement for a program that, until this year, had never won a tournament game.

A Game for the Ages

The back-and-forth battle culminated in a dramatic finish. With the score tied at 80, Nebraska’s Braden Frager drove to the basket and sunk a layup with just two seconds remaining, giving the Cornhuskers an 82-80 lead. Vanderbilt, however, wasn’t finished. Star guard Tyler Tanner launched a desperation heave from beyond mid-court as time expired. The shot rattled around the rim… and bounced out!

Hoiberg’s Emotional Response

Immediately after the game, Nebraska head coach Fred Hoiberg was visibly shaken, still processing the incredible sequence of events. “I’m still shaking,” Hoiberg confessed in a post-game interview. “I can’t believe that last shot… I’m speechless. Hell, I don’t even know what to say right now.” You can watch his emotional reaction here: https://twitter.com/HuskerMBB/status/1772145184144642369

Hoiberg praised the play of Braden Frager and Pryce Sandfort, highlighting the crucial drive and assist that led to the game-winning basket. He also acknowledged the defensive adjustments made late in the game that proved pivotal.

Breaking Barriers

Prior to the 2024 NCAA Tournament, Nebraska was the only Power Four conference team to have never secured a tournament victory. They shattered that barrier with a dominant win over Troy in the Round of 64, and now, they’ve followed it up with a thrilling victory over Vanderbilt. Their next challenge will be against the winner of Florida and Iowa in the Sweet Sixteen.

Respect for the Opponent

“My hat’s off to Vanderbilt. That’s a hell of a team,” Hoiberg added. “Unbelievably well-coached. Those guys play hard, they pressure. Very difficult on a one-day prep to get the game plan put in, but our guys got off to a great start. I thought that was very important. We did a good job getting our fans into the game.”

Tanner’s Disappointment

Vanderbilt’s Tyler Tanner, despite the heartbreak, showed class in defeat. When asked about his final shot, he simply shook his head, acknowledging how close he came to winning the game. “Yeah, it hurts pretty bad being that close, especially in a hard-fought game,” Tanner said. “It was electric the whole time. Big crowd presence. Yeah, it hurts that the season is over.”

This victory is a testament to the leadership of Fred Hoiberg and the resilience of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. They’ve not only made history but have also captured the hearts of college basketball fans across the nation.
