Sprint Qualifying Recap

Russell’s blistering lap of 1m 31.520s on soft tires in SQ3 was nearly three-tenths of a second faster than Antonelli’s best effort. The young Italian driver was briefly investigated for impeding Lando Norris, but no further action was taken.

Reigning World Champion Lando Norris (McLaren) finished third, with Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) splitting the McLaren duo in fourth, followed by Oscar Piastri. Charles Leclerc secured sixth, while Pierre Gasly (Alpine) and Max Verstappen (Red Bull) rounded out the top eight. Ollie Bearman (Haas) and Isack Hadjar (Red Bull) completed the top ten.

Midfield Battles and Eliminations

Nico Hulkenberg (Audi) narrowly missed out on reaching SQ3, starting Saturday’s Sprint from 11th. Esteban Ocon (Haas) followed closely behind in 12th. Further down the grid, the Williams and Aston Martin teams struggled, with Carlos Sainz, Alex Albon, Fernando Alonso, and Lance Stroll all eliminated in SQ1.

Cadillac also faced challenges, with Valtteri Bottas ahead of Sergio Perez, who couldn’t set a lap time due to a fuel system issue. The session highlighted the competitive intensity of the midfield, with small margins separating those who progressed and those who didn’t.

Session Breakdown

The opening segment saw Red Bull initially set the pace, but Russell quickly asserted his dominance. Ferrari opted not to use their ‘flip-flop’ rear wing, a design feature tested during practice. As the session progressed, drivers battled for position, with several experiencing minor off-track moments.

SQ2 saw Leclerc initially lead, but Antonelli and Russell quickly surpassed his time. An incident involving Antonelli and Norris was investigated but deemed not to warrant a penalty. Several drivers, including Hulkenberg and Ocon, narrowly missed the cut.

The final SQ3 segment was a showcase of speed, with Russell ultimately claiming pole position. Norris secured third, while Hamilton’s performance placed him among the frontrunners. Verstappen expressed dissatisfaction with his car’s grip, finishing eighth.
