Darius Acuff Jr. Poised to Lead Arkansas Against Oklahoma

History-making Arkansas Razorbacks guard, Darius Acuff Jr., is expected to return to action when the No. 17 and third-seeded Razorbacks (23-8) face the 11th-seeded Oklahoma Sooners (19-14) in the quarterfinals of the Southeastern Conference tournament on Thursday in Nashville, Tenn. This highly anticipated matchup comes as Oklahoma is riding a six-game winning streak, a remarkable turnaround after a previous nine-game losing streak.

Oklahoma’s Momentum and Arkansas’s Key Player

Oklahoma coach Porter Moser highlighted the Sooners’ recent success, stating, “I’ve heard it for years, the committee (NCAA Tournament selection committee) said, ‘Who’s playing the best basketball?’ We know Arkansas has been waiting, and they are a terrific team. ‘Cal’ (coach John Calipari) has them playing at a high level. These guys are really, really hungry and chasing right now. We’re not done yet.” Oklahoma’s recent dominant 83-63 victory over Texas A&M showcased their improved form.

The return of Acuff Jr. is a significant boost for Arkansas. The SEC Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year, as voted by league coaches, has been sidelined due to a nagging left ankle injury. He sustained the injury during a game against Auburn on February 14th, requiring him to wear a walking boot at times.

Acuff Jr.’s Impact and Calipari’s Strategy

Arkansas coach John Calipari explained the decision to rest Acuff Jr., saying, “The whole plan was to give him some time, let him be closer to 100%, and let’s go.” Acuff Jr. leads the SEC in both scoring (22.2 points) and assists (6.4), putting him in rare company alongside Hall of Famer Pete Maravich as one of only two players in league history to achieve these numbers. He’s also the only Division I player currently averaging at least 20 points and 6 assists.

Calipari emphasized the need for Acuff Jr. to elevate his defensive game, stating, “If we’re going to do something in the postseason, he’s got to defend better. Play with a little more energy.”

Rising Stars and Tournament Implications

In Acuff Jr.’s absence, freshman Meleek Thomas stepped up, scoring a season-high 30 points against Missouri and earning a spot on the SEC All-Freshman team. Thomas is averaging 15.4 points per game.

Most projections currently place Arkansas as a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Calipari stressed the importance of continuing to win, not just for the SEC tournament, but also to improve their seeding in the NCAA tournament. “Let’s understand that we are playing for something even bigger than just this (SEC) tournament. You are playing to hold your seed, improve your seed. And that means you keep winning, then you keep winning.”

Previous Matchup and Key Players

Arkansas previously defeated Oklahoma 83-79 in Norman on January 27th, with Acuff Jr. contributing 21 points and 10 assists, and Thomas adding 16 points. Oklahoma’s Nijel Pack had 22 points in that contest. Pack is expected to play despite suffering a head-to-head contact injury in the game against Texas A&M.

With both teams playing at a high level and key players returning, this quarterfinal matchup promises to be a thrilling contest.
