Daniil Medvedev Crushed in Straight Sets by Matteo Berrettini at Monte-Carlo Masters
The tennis world was left stunned on Wednesday at the Rolex Monte-Carlo Masters as Matteo Berrettini delivered a dominant performance, defeating World No. 10 Daniil Medvedev 6-0, 6-0 in a mere 49 minutes to advance to the third round. The victory marks a historic low for Medvedev, representing the first time in his tour-level career he has lost a match without winning a single game.
Wild card Berrettini was ruthlessly efficient, capitalizing on an uncharacteristically off-form Medvedev. The Russian star didn’t even manage to earn a single game point on his own serve throughout the entire match. Berrettini’s precision and power proved too much for Medvedev to handle on the clay court.
Berrettini Reflects on a Career-Best Performance
“I think it was one of the best performances of my life,” Berrettini stated after the match. “I think I missed three shots in the entire match and it is not easy against a tricky player like Daniil. I think the game plan was perfect and my weapons were working.”
Berrettini continued, explaining his focus throughout the match: “I faced two break points in the first game and then after that it felt I was playing better than him. I was not expecting to win zero, zero like that. But I kept my focus as I know one break or two breaks is not enough sometimes, so I kept pushing.”
A Perfect Week So Far for the Italian
This dominant victory follows a similarly impressive performance in the first round, where Roberto Bautista Agut retired while Berrettini led 4-0. The 29-year-old will now look to continue his flawless run in the Principality, awaiting the winner of the match between Joao Fonseca and Arthur Rinderknech in the third round.
“I have been playing for a long time, so I felt it was really important to hold my serve at the start of the second set,” Berrettini added. “It is a matter of a few points at the start and then when you go up two breaks you are more relaxed and the ball is [flying] out of your racquet.”
First 6-0, 6-0 Win and a Return to Form
This win represents Berrettini’s first tour-level match victory achieved with a 6-0, 6-0 scoreline. It’s also his first victory over a Top 10 opponent since he defeated Alexander Zverev in Monte-Carlo last season. Interestingly, Alex de Minaur achieved a similar double bagel victory over Grigor Dimitrov in Monte-Carlo in 2025.
Medvedev, competing on clay for the first time this season, struggled to find his rhythm on Court Rainier III. The 30-year-old, who had previously enjoyed success on hard courts with titles in Dubai and Brisbane, committed 27 unforced errors, leading to his first defeat against Berrettini in their Lexus ATP Head2Head series (3-1). This result raises questions about Medvedev’s clay-court form heading into the European clay-court swing.
