Dalhousie University’s New Ice Rink: A Blend of Tradition and Precision
Last week, the ice installation at Dalhousie University’s Oulton-Stanish Centre offered a captivating look into the art of rink creation. It’s a process that beautifully combines precision, skilled craftsmanship, and surprisingly, deliberately low-tech methods to produce a world-class ice surface. What appears immaculate upon completion – including the striking Dal Tigers logo at centre ice – is the result of decades-old techniques honed to perfection.
Forget high-tech machinery; much of this meticulous work relies on tools as simple as yarn, tape, rollers, ropes, and even spray bottles. Careful hand flooding, precise measuring, marking, and layering are all crucial steps. Interestingly, even major international venues still employ these same techniques, highlighting the enduring importance of skill and the human touch in creating a flawless sheet of ice.
Behind the Scenes: 10 Fascinating Facts
The creation of this ice surface wasn’t a solo effort. It was a collaborative project made possible by the dedication and leadership of the Recreation Facility Association of Nova Scotia (RFANS). Technical Director Bud MacInnis, Executive Director Jennie Greencorn, and intern Kaden Medve-Racine expertly guided Dalhousie staff through every stage of the process.
The Oulton-Stanish Centre is set to officially open in March 2026, and anticipation is building! This new facility promises to be a vibrant hub where students, faculty, staff, and the Halifax community can come together to thrive. Whether you’re a seasoned skater or a cheering spectator, the Oulton-Stanish Centre will be a place to experience the energy and excitement of Dal Tigers athletics.
