Coppa Italia: Inter Set for Major Shakeup in Como Clash

From goalkeeper to striker, Inter Milan is poised for a revolutionized lineup compared to their recent Serie A victory against Genoa. Coach Cristian Chivu is expected to make as many as eight changes for the first leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final against Como, impacting nearly every department of the team.

This rotation is made possible by the depth of the Inter squad, despite the absences of key forwards Bonny and Lautaro. It’s also a necessity, dictated by a demanding schedule that has placed a crucial match for Inter’s season between their Champions League elimination and next week’s derby against AC Milan – a game that could significantly impact their Scudetto aspirations.

Focus Shifts to Como

However, the immediate focus is solely on Como, where Chivu will aim to secure a significant advantage in the tie with a team comprised largely of players who have seen less playing time this season.

Goalkeeper Change

The changes begin in goal, where Josep Martinez is expected to return to the starting lineup for the first time in a month, replacing Yann Sommer. Martinez last featured in the quarter-final against Torino when San Siro was unavailable due to the Olympics. This appearance will mark his complete run in the competition, regaining valuable match rhythm.

Defensive Overhaul

The entire defensive trio will also be altered. While Akanji, De Vrij, and Carlos Augusto started against Genoa, Bisseck, Acerbi, and Bastoni – who has served his Serie A suspension – will take their places.

Midfield and Wings

Changes are also anticipated on the flanks, with Chivu potentially giving the team’s MVP of the season, Carlos Augusto, a rest and handing a starting role to Darmian for only the second time this season, replacing Luis Henrique.

Calhanoglu’s Return

The most significant change comes in midfield with the return of Hakan Calhanoglu to the starting eleven. He has been sidelined for nearly two months, making brief appearances against Juventus and Genoa. The Turkish international suffered an injury during the match against Napoli on January 11th, returning briefly only to experience another minor setback that forced him to miss the playoff against Bodo and the trip to Lecce.

Sucic and Mkhitaryan are expected to partner Calhanoglu in midfield.

Attack Options

Upfront, the lineup is still being finalized. The competition for a spot alongside Pio Esposito is between Thuram and Frattesi, with Frattesi currently favored. This choice would also provide Chivu with an offensive alternative off the bench, given the unavailability of Lautaro and Bonny.

However, the final decision is expected to be made shortly before kickoff, as is Chivu’s usual approach.
