Colin Dorgan: A Triumph of Spirit on the Ice

In a story that transcends the game, Colin Dorgan of Blackstone Valley Schools has become a symbol of resilience and determination. Just weeks after a devastating family tragedy, Dorgan delivered a game-winning goal in double overtime against Portsmouth, propelling his team into the Division II championship game. The final score was 3-2, a testament to the team’s unwavering spirit.

“Greatest moment of my life,” Dorgan shared with WPRI-TV following the electrifying win. His contributions throughout the playoffs have been invaluable, including a two-goal performance in the decisive game of a quarterfinal series, as reported by ESPN.

A Team United in Grief and Strength

The victory carries a profound weight, occurring less than a month after a tragic shooting at the Dennis M. Lynch Arena in Pawtucket. The shooter, identified as Robert Dorgan, tragically took the lives of his ex-wife, Rhonda Dorgan, and their son, Aidan Dorgan. Robert Dorgan, who also identified as Roberta Esposito and Roberta Dorgano, died by suicide at the scene.

Colin Dorgan was on the ice during the horrific event. Blackstone Valley coach Chris Librizzi emphasized the importance of unity during this incredibly difficult time. “The biggest thing for us after the tragedy took place was to keep them together as a family,” Librizzi told WPRI-TV. “I was with [Colin] every single day, and his sister, and we as a group…got together for 14 days straight. And I believe it made a difference. The bonding that this team went through every day the last two weeks has been nothing less than superior.”
