Ethan Salas Dominates in Spring Breakout Against the Chicago Cubs

MESA, Ariz. – The San Diego Padres witnessed a glimpse of the future on Saturday as top prospect Ethan Salas took center stage in the Spring Breakout game against the Chicago Cubs. This annual showcase of MLB’s brightest young talents saw Salas deliver a performance that reminded everyone why he was once considered the top international prospect in the 2023 class.

Salas’ Explosive Performance

Salas didn’t just participate; he took over the game. He launched a go-ahead three-run home run, complete with a stylish bat drop, and added a single and a stolen base to his stat line. But his impact wasn’t limited to offense. Salas showcased his defensive prowess by throwing out two Chicago Cubs attempting to steal and making a spectacular catch in foul territory.

While the Padres ultimately fell short, losing the game 7-5, Salas’ performance was a resounding success. It was the Ethan Salas the Padres had envisioned – a player capable of impacting the game in all facets.

Overcoming Adversity

This performance was particularly significant considering the challenges Salas has faced recently. A back injury sidelined him after April 27th last season, and prior struggles had caused him to drop in prospect rankings. He wasn’t featured on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 list, or many others.

However, Salas remains unfazed by external evaluations. “Not at all,” Salas said. “The guys in this clubhouse know who I am. I don’t think any prospect rank or not determines that — determines how I am as a teammate, as a human, as a baseball player. So I’m just going to go out and keep playing my game every single day, happy like a kid.”

A Year of Recovery and Rejuvenation

2025 was a lost year for Salas, spent largely on the sidelines. While he focused on mental preparation, he acknowledges that nothing beats being back on the field. “It’s way better doing this,” Salas said. “Definitely happy to be back on the field. And yeah, I’m excited. I’m excited for the season.”

At just 19 years old, Salas has plenty of time to develop. His primary goal for the upcoming season is simple: “Just be healthy the whole season,” Salas said. “Then it’s just: Play ball like a kid and have fun, win a lot of games. That’s pretty much all I’m thinking about.”

Other Padres Prospects Shine

Salas wasn’t the only Padres prospect to impress. Here are a few other standouts from Saturday’s game:

  • RHP Lan-Hong SuSu: The 19-year-old Taiwanese signing boasts a smooth delivery and hit 97 mph while pitching a scoreless seventh inning, striking out two. He currently ranks as the No. 18 Padres prospect on MLB Pipeline. MLB Pipeline
  • RF Kale Fountain: A fifth-round pick in 2024, Fountain showcased his power with a monstrous solo home run. He finished 2-for-2 with a walk.
  • CF Ryan Wideman: Selected in the third round last summer, Wideman displayed impressive defensive skills with a running, leaping catch and a single through the right side.

The Padres have a bright future, and Saturday’s Spring Breakout game offered a tantalizing preview of the talent on the horizon. The matchup against the Chicago Cubs provided a valuable opportunity for these young players to showcase their skills and build momentum for the season ahead.
