Chicago Cubs’ Moisés Ballesteros: Counsell’s Approach to a Rising Star

Moisés Ballesteros, a 22-year-old Venezuelan prospect, is generating significant buzz during Chicago Cubs Spring Training. However, manager Craig Counsell is keen on managing expectations, even among his own coaching staff. Counsell’s approach highlights a deliberate strategy to allow Ballesteros’s natural talent to flourish without undue pressure.

As reported by Patrick Mooney of The Athletic, Counsell playfully instructed his hitting coaches to “stay away” from Ballesteros. This wasn’t a directive to ignore the young player, but rather a recognition of the potential pitfalls of over-analysis and interference. In an era of advanced analytics and specialized coaching, Counsell believes in allowing Ballesteros to develop organically.

The Cubs’ Investment in Player Development

The Cubs have heavily invested in their training facilities, including a state-of-the-art hitting and pitching lab, a result of nearly $17 million in upgrades to their Arizona complex. This investment reflects a commitment to providing players with the resources they need to succeed. However, Counsell’s approach suggests that technology and instruction are most effective when used judiciously.

The Cubs’ recent success in developing players like Pete Crow-Armstrong demonstrates the value of a stable coaching staff and individualized training routines. This continuity is expected to benefit Ballesteros as well.

Ballesteros’s Impressive Potential

Ballesteros has already showcased his potential with impressive displays of power, including two home runs against Los Angeles Angels pitcher Alek Manoah. Counsell acknowledges that while immediate home run production may not be forthcoming, Ballesteros possesses the “gifts” and instincts to become a significant power hitter in the future.

Despite being listed at 5’10” and 225 pounds, Ballesteros is surprisingly athletic, having run the 60-yard dash in 6.8 seconds as a teenager. His understanding of the strike zone and potential as a catcher led to a $1.2 million signing bonus five years ago.

Role on the Team

While Counsell remained noncommittal about Ballesteros’s role on Opening Day, Cubs officials are reportedly enthusiastic about his hitting ability. He is being considered as a potential replacement for Kyle Tucker, who signed with the Dodgers, and could see significant playing time as the designated hitter. Although currently behind Carson Kelly and Miguel Amaya on the catcher depth chart, the Cubs haven’t ruled out the possibility of Ballesteros eventually becoming their starting catcher.

Counsell emphasizes Ballesteros’s “instinctual” feel for the game, a quality often attributed to his experience as a catcher. While his defensive contributions are currently limited, his offensive potential is undeniable.

Ballesteros’s strong performance in September, while Tucker was injured, earned him a spot on the playoff roster. He continues to impress during Spring Training, consistently hitting the ball hard to all fields. Counsell notes the encouraging exit velocity and believes the home runs will come with continued development.
