The Lime Green Legacy at Centre Bell: A Canadiens Fan Tradition
If you’re a devoted Montreal Canadiens fan, you’ve likely noticed them – the dedicated individuals sporting vibrant lime green tops behind the net at every game. What began as a personal superstition has blossomed into a touching tribute and a growing tradition within the Canadiens community.
The Origin of the Lime Green
The story began with David Star, a long-time season ticket holder. According to an article by Marc-Antoine Godin, Star noticed a remarkable correlation: the Canadiens consistently won when he wore a particular lime green jacket. It was a lucky charm, and he embraced it wholeheartedly.
A Family Keeps the Tradition Alive
Sadly, Mr. Star passed away last year. However, his legacy lives on. This season, his family has taken up the mantle, proudly wearing lime green jackets to honour his memory at every Canadiens home game. But the story doesn’t end there.
A Community United in Lime Green
During a recent game on February 28th, Star’s family went above and beyond. They purchased additional tickets in the same section and partnered with the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation to provide tickets to students from Trois-Rivières. The goal? To spread the lime green spirit.
The family also enlisted the help of Amelie Cloutier, a TikTok creator who had previously explained the origin of the lime green fans. They asked her to create another video, detailing their plan and inviting fans to join in by wearing lime green to the game.
A Sea of Green at Centre Bell
The response was incredible. During the national anthem, from my vantage point in the press gallery, I counted a staggering 42 people proudly displaying the lucky colour! It felt like a playful reverse “Where’s Waldo,” scanning the crowd for the vibrant hue. There were likely even more, hidden from view in sections below the press gallery.
Adding to the serendipity, the security clearance tags on our bags in the press gallery were also lime green! Whether a coincidence or a subtle nod from the Canadiens organization, it felt like a fitting tribute.
A Superstition Remembered
The initiative was a resounding success, garnering media attention and sparking conversation during the broadcast. Rest in peace, Mister Star. Your lucky jacket superstition continues to inspire, and your memory is far from forgotten. The lime green tradition at Centre Bell is a testament to the power of fandom, family, and the enduring spirit of the Montreal Canadiens.
