Brooks Koepka’s Return to The Palm Beaches

All eyes are on Brooks Koepka this week as he makes his highly anticipated return to the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, an event he considers his “hometown tournament,” after a three-year absence. The narrative surrounding Koepka extends beyond the golf course, encompassing a significant charitable contribution and a notable equipment change.

A Generous Donation and a New Approach

Koepka recently announced a $5 million donation to charity, fulfilling a commitment made as part of his agreement when joining the Returning Member Program in January. This act of generosity underscores his commitment to giving back to the community. Adding to the intrigue is his recent switch in putters. After struggling with his short game at Torrey Pines in his first PGA Tour event since 2022, Koepka transitioned from a traditional blade putter to a mallet ahead of the WM Phoenix Open.

Adjusting to the Mallet Putter

While the change didn’t immediately yield results – he missed the cut at TPC Scottsdale – Koepka remains optimistic. He acknowledged in his pre-tournament press conference that he was still refining his technique with the new putter. “I didn’t know where exactly I was hitting it, and obviously when you change putters, speed becomes another thing, and I felt like the speed was slightly off,” Koepka explained. “Now I understand exactly where to hit it and where it’s going. I feel like my speed control has gotten better, and just with a few changes, just tidying those things up.”

Odds and the Advantage of Home

Despite the initial struggles with the mallet, oddsmakers still view Koepka as a strong contender at PGA National’s Champion Course, listing him seventh favorite at +2900 to win. The convenience of playing close to home is a definite advantage. “It’s definitely weird staying at home,” Koepka admitted. “You just get so accustomed to living out of a suitcase or hotel or whatever.” He fondly recalls attending the event since childhood, even carrying a sign as a young fan.

A Familiar Event, A Changing Field

Koepka last played the Cognizant Classic in 2022, finishing in a tie for 16th place. This year’s field presents a different landscape, lacking the star power typically associated with major tournaments, with only Ryan Gerard ranked within the top 30 of the Official World Golf Ranking. However, Koepka isn’t focused on the rankings of his competitors. “There’s probably more guys I’ve just had to introduce myself to,” he said, noting the constant turnover in professional golf. “I think I remember reading a stat years ago where every four years there’s a 50 percent turnover, something like that.”

Climbing the Rankings

Koepka’s participation in the Cognizant Classic is also a step towards rebuilding his Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR). He currently sits at No. 263, a significant drop from the No. 1 position he held for 38 consecutive weeks beginning in May 2019, following his time on the LIV circuit. He views this week as a chance to leverage his performance and improve his standing.

The Comforts of Home

Ultimately, Koepka is embracing the opportunity to play a “true hometown event,” with family and friends just a short drive away. “I don’t think anybody in my family or really anybody has got more than like a 25-minute drive,” he shared. “It’s nice to be able to be this close to home and to have everybody come out. It’s just enjoyable to see faces you haven’t seen in a long time.”
