Aryna Sabalenka Powers Through to BNP Paribas Open Quarter-Finals

World number one Aryna Sabalenka showcased her dominance at the BNP Paribas Open, securing a convincing 6-2, 6-4 victory over Naomi Osaka in the fourth round. The match marked the first encounter between the two Grand Slam champions since 2018, when Osaka triumphed en route to her US Open title.

However, this time, Sabalenka proved too strong for the 16th seed, wrapping up the match in a swift 80 minutes. The Belarusian’s powerful game and consistent performance left Osaka struggling to find her rhythm.

“It’s crazy, for so many years we only played once. I’m pretty sure we are playing many more matches. She’s coming back playing great tennis,” Sabalenka commented after the match. “I’m pretty happy with the result – much better than last time.”

Osaka’s Return and Sabalenka’s Control

Osaka, returning to competitive tennis after a 14-month absence following the birth of her daughter Shai in July 2023, started brightly with a confident service game. However, Sabalenka quickly asserted her control, breaking Osaka’s serve to take a 2-1 lead. A barrage of powerful backhands followed, allowing Sabalenka to extend her lead to 5-2 and comfortably close out the first set with an ace.

The second set saw both players hold serve initially, but Sabalenka seized the decisive break at 4-2, ultimately serving out the match to secure her place in the quarter-finals.

“I’m happy that I put so much pressure on her today, that I brought variety to the court,” Sabalenka added. “My serve worked well. On the return I played really great tennis. Happy with my performance for sure.”

Looking Ahead

Sabalenka, a runner-up at last year’s BNP Paribas Open, will now face either Canada’s Victoria Mboko or Amanda Anisimova of the United States in the last eight. This victory further solidifies her position as a top contender in the tournament.
