## Amen Thompson: From Defensive Prodigy to Rockets’ Offensive Force
When the Houston Rockets selected Amen Thompson as the fourth overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, they saw a raw, athletic talent with immense potential, even after missing out on Victor Wembanyama. Thompson immediately impressed, showcasing his explosive athleticism and defensive prowess. However, his journey has been about much more than just highlight-reel dunks and lockdown defense.
Initially, Thompson’s offensive skills – particularly his passing and decision-making – were areas for development. As his rookie season progressed, it became clear that Thompson thrived as a disruptive defender. With increased playing time and a growing understanding of the NBA’s pace, he quickly established himself as one of the Rockets’ most impactful defenders.
Thompson’s game truly took off following Alperen Sengun’s injury. The Rockets shifted Jabari Smith to center, inserting Thompson into the starting lineup at power forward. He continued this strong play into his second season, and after another injury to Smith, he reclaimed his starting role and hasn’t looked back. His defensive excellence culminated in a First Team All-Defense selection, and he helped propel the Rockets to their best record since 2020.
While Thompson excelled defensively and in transition, his offensive consistency remained a key area for improvement. He showed flashes of brilliance, but needed to become a more reliable scoring threat. His first two seasons saw a steady increase in his points per game, rising from 9.5 to 14.1 – a positive trend, but one that demanded further growth.
### A Third Season Breakthrough
Thompson’s third season has been a revelation. He’s emerged as one of the Rockets’ most consistent offensive players, building upon his already elite defensive abilities and transition game. The injury to Fred VanVleet before the 2025 training camp placed even greater responsibility on Thompson’s shoulders, and he has risen to the challenge.
The Rockets currently hold the fourth seed in the Western Conference with a record of 41-25, locked in a tight battle for home-court advantage. While veteran Kevin Durant, at age 37, continues to lead the team, Thompson has become the most consistent player alongside him.
Thompson is not only consistently guarding the opposing team’s best player, but he’s also significantly increased his offensive production. His recent 23-point performance against the New Orleans Pelicans marked the 27th time this season he’s scored 20 or more points – surpassing his combined total of 18 such games from his first two seasons. He’s currently averaging career highs in points, assists, and free-throw shooting.
Thompson has become one of the few players, alongside Durant and occasionally Alperen Sengun, capable of creating his own shot. While his three-point shooting remains a work in progress (and has even regressed slightly this season), he recently had a two-game stretch with successful three-pointers, his first since January 1st.
For the Rockets to make a deep playoff run, they’ll need contributions beyond Durant. Amen Thompson has proven he can be more than just an elite defender; he’s evolving into a legitimate offensive threat.
