Alan Huss Named Head Coach of Creighton Men’s Basketball
OMAHA, Neb. (Mar. 23, 2026) – A new chapter begins for Creighton Men’s Basketball as Greg McDermott, the winningest coach in program history, announced his retirement following the team’s final game in the College Basketball Crown tournament. Stepping into the head coach role is Alan Huss, a former Bluejay player and associate head coach, poised to lead the program forward.
A Legacy of Leadership: Greg McDermott’s Impact
For 16 years, Greg McDermott guided the Bluejays to unprecedented success, amassing a remarkable 365-188 record at Creighton and a career record of 645-383 across multiple institutions. He led the team to 14 seasons with 20 or more wins and secured 12 NCAA Tournament victories in 10 appearances, including an Elite Eight run in 2023 and three Sweet Sixteen appearances. McDermott’s leadership also saw Creighton transition successfully from the Missouri Valley Conference to the BIG EAST, consistently ranking among the league’s elite.
“It has been an incredible honor to lead the Creighton men’s basketball program,” said McDermott. “I’m very proud of the young men who have worn the Bluejay uniform and represented our program with class. Witnessing their growth, both on and off the court, has been deeply rewarding.”
A Smooth Transition: The Coaching Succession Plan
This transition is the culmination of an innovative coaching succession plan announced in April 2025, designed to ensure a seamless handover of leadership. The plan, developed collaboratively with McDermott, positions Alan Huss for immediate success.
“We are deeply grateful for Coach McDermott’s contributions,” said Creighton President the Rev. Daniel S. Hendrickson, SJ, PhD. “He has guided our teams to thrilling wins and helped our student-athletes develop into leaders.”
Alan Huss: Returning Home to Lead
Alan Huss returns to his alma mater with a deep understanding of the program’s culture and a clear vision for the future. Having served as associate head coach and head coach in waiting since April 2025, Huss is well-prepared to take the helm.
“I am incredibly honored and humbled to be named the head men’s basketball coach at Creighton University,” said Huss. “This University has shaped who I am, and the opportunity to lead this program is something I don’t take lightly. I want to thank Fr. Hendrickson and Marcus Blossom for their trust, and Coach McDermott for his mentorship.”
Looking Ahead: The Future of Creighton Basketball
With Alan Huss at the helm, Creighton Basketball is poised to continue its tradition of excellence. Huss inherits a program built on a strong foundation of success, a dedicated fanbase, and a commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the court. The Bluejays aim to remain a dominant force in the BIG EAST and continue making deep runs in the NCAA Tournament.
Creighton has consistently produced NBA talent, including three First Round picks (Doug McDermott, Justin Patton, Baylor Scheierman) and boasts a strong academic record, with a high percentage of players graduating and pursuing professional careers. The McDermott Center, a testament to the previous coach’s impact, will serve as the hub for this exciting new era.
A news conference is scheduled for Wednesday, March 25, at 10 a.m. at The McDermott Center. The event will be streamed on the Creighton Athletic Department’s YouTube page.
