NFL Trade Rumors: Could De’Von Achane Land with the Vikings?
ESPN analysts have begun identifying potential trade candidates across the NFL, and one name that’s sparked interest is Miami Dolphins running back De’Von Achane. While the connection is currently speculative, the Minnesota Vikings have emerged as a possible destination for the explosive playmaker. This comes amidst questions surrounding the future of current Vikings running back, Aaron Jones.
Achane: A Rising Star in the NFL
Ben Solak and Dan Graziano of ESPN compiled a list of the top 15 offensive trade candidates, placing Achane at number two. The 24-year-old has quickly established himself as one of the league’s premier running backs, and will likely command a significant contract in the near future. The question is whether the Dolphins, potentially entering a rebuilding phase, are willing to meet his demands.
Graziano noted, “The league seems to believe the Dolphins are in a full rebuild, which means they’re getting calls on all of their star players. My sense is that they’re far more likely to extend Achane’s contract than to listen to those trade offers, but in their situation, you answer the phone when it rings.” Any trade involving Achane remains a long shot, requiring a substantial offer to entice Miami.
Why Achane Fits the Vikings’ Needs
Achane’s skillset is particularly intriguing for Minnesota. Solak highlighted his game-breaking speed, high-volume receiving ability, and surprising toughness. “He’s a better — and younger — talent than anyone in the loaded free agent RB market,” Solak emphasized. Last season, Achane rushed for 1,350 yards and eight touchdowns, leading the NFL with an impressive 5.7 yards per carry.
His track speed – a blazing 4.32-second 40-yard dash – translates remarkably well to the football field. He’s a true explosive weapon, capable of changing the game with every touch. While Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason are reliable, they lack Achane’s game-breaking potential. Jones, in particular, may be a trade candidate himself due to his salary cap implications.
Achane’s Stats & Impact
- Rushing Yards (2023): 1,350
- Yards Per Carry: 5.7 (NFL Best)
- Touchdowns: 8
- Receptions: 145 (Last 2 Seasons)
- Receiving Yards: 1,080 (Last 2 Seasons)
- Receiving Touchdowns: 10 (Last 2 Seasons)
Beyond his rushing prowess, Achane is a valuable asset in the passing game, with 145 receptions for 1,080 yards and 10 touchdowns over the past two seasons.
Dolphins’ Stance & Future Outlook
New Dolphins GM Jon-Eric Sullivan expressed a desire to retain Achane and fellow star Jaylen Waddle, stating, “You never say never, but those are marvelous football players… I do want those guys to be part of the football team.” However, he didn’t entirely rule out the possibility of trades.
If Achane were to become available, he would fill a critical need for the Vikings – an explosive playmaker in the backfield. The team will need to weigh the cost of acquiring such a talent against their existing roster and future plans. The situation with Aaron Jones will also play a significant role in their decision-making process.
