Starfleet Academy’s Journey Ends: A Look at the Cancellation and the Future of Star Trek

The ambitious series Starfleet Academy, a recent addition to the ever-expanding Star Trek universe, will conclude with its upcoming second season. Originally greenlit by Paramount+ in 2023, the show received a renewal for a second season even before the first had aired, demonstrating initial confidence in its potential. However, despite a promising start, the series has been cancelled.

A Joint Statement from CBS Studios and Paramount+

CBS Studios and Paramount+ released a joint statement expressing their pride in the series: “We’re incredibly proud of the ambition, passion, and creativity that went into bringing ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ to life. The series introduced audiences to a bold new group of characters, welcomed familiar faces, and expanded the ‘Star Trek’ universe in exciting new ways. We’re grateful to Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau, Gaia Violo, and the entire cast and crew who pushed storytelling boundaries in the spirit of Gene Roddenberry’s vision. We look forward to sharing the upcoming second and final season with everyone, and continuing to celebrate the cast, crew, and all that was accomplished with this series.”

A Critical Look at Season One

The first season of Starfleet Academy garnered a respectable 87% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Variety’s Aramide Tinubu describing it as a “delightful entry point” into the franchise. Despite positive reviews, the show struggled to attract a significant viewership. Throughout its 10-episode run, Starfleet Academy failed to appear on Nielsen’s Top 10 streaming viewership charts, ultimately contributing to the decision to end the series.

Setting the Stage: The 32nd Century

Starfleet Academy is set after the events of Star Trek: Discovery, taking place in the 32nd century. The show centers around the inaugural class of students and instructors at the newly re-established Starfleet Academy. The talented cast includes Sandro Rosta, Karim Diané, Kerrice Brooks, George Hawkins, Bella Shepard, and Zoë Steiner, alongside veteran actors like Holly Hunter, Paul Giamatti, Gina Yashere, Robert Picardo (a familiar face from Star Trek: Voyager), and Tig Notaro. Tatiana Maslany also made a memorable guest appearance.

A Message from the Showrunners

Series co-showrunners and executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau penned a heartfelt letter expressing their gratitude to the dedicated team behind the show. They emphasized the joy of continuing Gene Roddenberry’s vision, exploring boundaries of time, space, and human potential. Their letter underscored the core message of Star Trek – a belief in the best of humanity and a commitment to diversity, inquiry, and respect for all life.

They wrote: “Whether you’re working on ‘Star Trek’ or part of the marvel that is ‘Star Trek’ fandom — its very heart, soul, and conscience —the joy comes from adventuring across boundaries of time, space, and the humanly possible in service to Roddenberry’s transformative vision of the future.”

The Future of the Star Trek Franchise

Alex Kurtzman, who has spearheaded the current wave of Star Trek television, is currently under contract with CBS Studios through the end of 2026. Discussions are reportedly underway for a new deal to keep him involved in the franchise. Beyond the conclusion of Starfleet Academy, two more seasons of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are on the horizon, with Season 4 expected later this year and a fifth and final season recently completed. The animated series Star Trek: Scouts continues to air on YouTube in partnership with Nickelodeon Digital Studios.

While the future beyond these projects remains uncertain, Paramount remains committed to the Star Trek IP, with a new Star Trek movie currently in development. The franchise continues to evolve, seeking new ways to explore Roddenberry’s vision for the future.

Executive Producers

Starfleet Academy is executive produced by Alex Kurtzman, Noga Landau, Gaia Violo, Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa, and John Weber.
