Robert Plant Celebrated as a ‘Record Store Legend’
As Record Store Day approaches later this month, a momentous honour has been bestowed upon a true music icon: Robert Plant. The legendary Led Zeppelin frontman has been awarded the prestigious ‘Record Store Legend’ award, recognizing his profound and lasting impact on the global music landscape and his unwavering support for independent record stores and emerging artists.
The announcement came via Record Store Day’s Instagram, highlighting Plant’s significant contributions. He was present for the unveiling of a special commemorative plaque at Spillers Records in Cardiff, Wales – recognized as the world’s oldest record store. This location holds a special significance, embodying the enduring spirit of vinyl and the connection between artists and their fans.
The Importance of the Physical Record
During the ceremony, Robert Plant eloquently expressed his deep connection to record stores. “Record stores have always been a part of my life,” he stated. “For me, once you get to the physical record it’s because you really want to know and be a part of what the artist was considering.” He further elaborated, “And I know, as a guy who’s been making records since 1966, people want to take home something very special, to enjoy all the elements of what an artist has put together. We want a connection between the music and the art of the whole thing.”
Plant’s words underscore the enduring appeal of the physical record – a tangible connection to the artistry and creativity behind the music. In an increasingly digital world, record stores offer a unique experience, fostering a community of music lovers and providing a space for discovery.
Record Store Day & New Music on the Horizon
Record Store Day will take place on April 18th, promising a vibrant celebration of independent record stores and the artists they champion. Adding to the excitement, Robert Plant, alongside his band Saving Grace and singer Suzi Dian, is preparing to release a four-track EP titled Saving Grace: All That Glitters later this year. This release is sure to be a highly anticipated event for fans.
Robert Plant joins an esteemed group of recipients of the Record Store Legend award. Elton John was the inaugural honoree in 2017, and The Smiths’ Johnny Marr received the award in 2023. This award solidifies Plant’s legacy not only as a musical innovator but also as a passionate advocate for the preservation of record store culture.
