Mélissa Bédard: Inspiring Vulnerability on ‘L’Effet Lara’
Alex Nevsky admits to feeling hesitant in the initial episodes of the docu-reality series ‘L’Effet Lara,’ but quickly clarifies his experience. “I wasn’t holding back, but I have so many internal mechanisms preventing me from fully embracing how I want to be present. My body, everything, was blocking me. I felt more self-conscious than ever before,” he explained leading up to the premiere on Sunday, April 12th, at 9 PM on TVA.
With five albums under his belt, Nevsky wishes he could be an open book, but remains naturally shy and reserved – especially in front of cameras. He openly admires the freedom displayed by artists like Mélissa Bédard.
Finding Freedom Through Vulnerability
“My goodness, I wish I had the same freedom as Mélissa Bédard… The process is about removing yourself from the equation, and I was very much in my own way. It’s something I’m still working on today,” Nevsky added, reflecting on his 40th birthday in February, coinciding with the announcement of his separation from Vanessa Pilon after several years together.
“We’re doing well, we’ve been separated for months and are on great terms. Our daughter is happy. With the love and kindness we’re navigating this with, I can’t imagine a better way to go through this,” he shared briefly.
Filmed in the fall of 2024, ‘L’Effet Lara’ saw Nevsky confront his challenges and break down barriers, inspired by fellow participants Mélissa Bédard, Christian Bégin, Eve Côté, and Nathalie Simard. “They constantly brought me back to my difficulty in opening up as much as I wanted, reminding me of my discomfort. They light up in front of the cameras, while I tend to withdraw,” he explained. He is also composing the original music for Luc Picard’s upcoming film, Rédemptions.
Lara Fabian’s Guidance
Having previously worked with Lara Fabian as a coach on ‘La Voix’ (seasons 6 and 7), Nevsky already had an established rapport. “On ‘La Voix,’ we were equals, whereas I see myself as far from her equal. Lara is exceptional, and I always knew her pedagogical skills could benefit me. So, when this opportunity arose, I jumped at it.”
During a workshop, Fabian and vocal coach Fabio Lazarra encouraged Nevsky to relax and release his voice. Fabian urged him to stop self-judgement and trust her guidance. “I know ideally, she’d have slapped me in the face [laughs]. She was looking at me, and I was thinking: ‘I know, Lara, I really want to… you have no idea how much I want to, but there’s resistance.’”
A Transformative Experience
As the process unfolded, Nevsky felt safe enough to let go, inspired by the vulnerability of his peers. “There’s nothing more powerful than seeing other people who are afraid and overcoming their barriers,” he said, adding that he applied Fabian’s advice and tools during the production of his latest album, Tout ce que l’aube promet.
“In the studio, I performed and embodied the songs differently, with much more presence, less in my head, and with more technique. Ultimately, it brought me a greater sense of presence, which is huge because it makes all the difference!”
