Daniel Caesar Reflects on the Backlash Over Defending YesJulz
Daniel Caesar has recently discussed the significant repercussions he faced for publicly defending YesJulz following accusations of cultural appropriation. The incident, which occurred in 2019, he says, “forever changed” the course of his life.
The controversy stemmed from a 2017 social media post by Julz, featuring a t-shirt with a problematic phrase. Following the post, Caesar, known for his soulful music and introspective lyrics, stepped in to offer support, a move that drew considerable criticism.
A Shift in Perspective
During an appearance on The Breakfast Club, Caesar explained his initial response as a product of internalizing societal pressures and a desire for acceptance. However, he now acknowledges the validity of the criticism he received. “As time has passed, I’m like, ‘Oh, they were 100 percent right,’” he stated. “When you accept this type of behavior from people that throughout history have exemplified to you that they hate you… it’s undignified.”
He further elaborated that his younger self hadn’t considered the implications of defending such behavior. “When I look at YesJulz, I see an orphan girl that wants to be Black,” he shared, a statement that sparked debate among the show’s hosts. He explained his empathy stemmed from his own experiences growing up as a Black child surrounded by white people, and a desire to understand her upbringing.
A Catalyst for Growth
Caesar believes the experience was “meant to happen,” as it ultimately led to a deeper understanding of himself and the world around him. He admitted to being “naive” in his initial remarks and expressed gratitude for the lessons learned. “It forever changed the trajectory of my whole life, for sure,” he confessed. “I just, I thought I was being honest with myself and I didn’t realize how much anger and hatred I had in my own heart.”
Beyond the Controversy: A Philosophical Reflection
The conversation took an unexpected turn when Caesar shared his views on humanity, suggesting that psychedelic experiences, like taking acid, can reveal the interconnectedness of all things. “You know, you drop some acid and you’re like, ‘Oh, we’re actually all one,’” he mused. “We’re all just different leaves on a tree.”
This incident highlights the complexities of navigating cultural sensitivity and the importance of accountability in the public eye. Daniel Caesar’s willingness to reflect on his past actions and acknowledge his growth demonstrates a commitment to learning and evolving.
