Royal Caribbean Cancels Summer 2027 Cruises, Sparking Passenger Frustration

Royal Caribbean, a major player in the cruise industry, has announced the cancellation of more than 20 previously booked itineraries for the summer of 2027. This news has understandably left many travellers disappointed and scrambling to adjust their vacation plans.

Passenger Disappointment & Rising Costs

The cancellations are hitting particularly hard for repeat cruisers. “It’s so frustrating when they do this,” lamented a British traveller, recalling three previous cancellations over the past two years, as reported by The Independent. “When the announcement was made… it was impossible to book on the replacement ship: it was full. And they were asking double the price for a similar cruise!”

Affected Itineraries & Ship Redeployment

The cancellations primarily affect voyages scheduled between May and September 2027 aboard the Freedom of the Seas. Affected itineraries include:

  • Four-night cruises to the Bahamas
  • Five-night cruises to the Dominican Republic
  • Nine-night cruises with stops in Aruba and Curaçao

Instead of the originally planned voyages, the Freedom of the Seas will be redeployed to Southampton, England, due to an “ongoing itinerary planning process,” according to an email sent to affected passengers, as detailed by the unofficial Royal Caribbean blog (https://www.royalcaribbeanblog.com/).

Royal Caribbean’s Explanation

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson explained to The Independent that “Deployment planning is dynamic and regularly reviewed based on demand, capacity needs, and the overall health of the fleet.” This suggests the cancellations are a result of strategic adjustments based on market conditions and fleet management.

What Happens Next for Passengers?

Royal Caribbean states that passengers with existing bookings will be contacted directly via email. They will be offered options for a full refund or the opportunity to transfer their booking to an alternative itinerary. However, some passengers are already expressing concerns about the availability and pricing of alternative options.

“The Freedom is my favourite ship in the fleet, but this gives Royal Caribbean a bad image. So many people disappointed! I would be particularly furious if I had booked a nine-night cruise with those beautiful ports and ended up with only four or five nights in the Bahamas,” one traveller commented on Facebook.

Carnival Cruise Line Also Announces Cancellations

This news comes on the heels of similar cancellations from Carnival Cruise Line, which recently announced the cancellation of 11 voyages aboard the Carnival Firenze scheduled for fall 2026. Carnival also attributed these changes to an “itinerary modification.” They are offering affected passengers the option to rebook on another Carnival ship with a comparable fare and cabin, along with onboard credit, or a full refund.

Staying Informed

If you have a cruise booked with Royal Caribbean or Carnival, it’s crucial to stay informed and check your email regularly for updates. Consider contacting the cruise line directly if you haven’t received any communication regarding potential cancellations.
