Colton Underwood: Navigating Reality, Redemption, and Representation

Colton Underwood has become a familiar face through numerous reality television appearances. Yet, despite his experience, reunions and public scrutiny still evoke nervousness. “Reunions are always tricky, right?” he admits. “I played this big, bold, loud game in the castle [on The Traitors]. But that’s not really how I show up in real life.” This discrepancy between his on-screen persona – brash and confident – and the more reserved individual he presents is striking.

The ‘Traitors’ Backlash and the Search for Authenticity

Underwood’s gameplay on The Traitors proved polarizing. He quickly emerged as an aggressive player, openly influencing votes and declaring his targets. While sometimes accurate (like his assessment of Lisa Rinna’s behavior), other times he miscalculated. Despite the mixed reception, Underwood stands by his approach. “I loved how I showed up and I played,” he says. “I felt like I played it differently than a lot of people have ever played the game. That’s something I’m really proud of.”

However, his tactics drew intense criticism online. Fans mercilessly mocked his gameplay and even his fashion choices, leading producers to issue a statement urging them to stop the “harassment” and “cyberbullying.” The situation escalated to the point of death threats against Underwood and his family, as he revealed in an interview with Variety. He felt supported by Peacock and NBCUniversal during this difficult period, noting a cultural difference in reception compared to the UK version of the show.

A History of Public Scrutiny and Self-Discovery

Before The Traitors, Underwood’s journey through reality TV – including stints in the NFL, The Bachelorette, Bachelor in Paradise, and as The Bachelor – was already marked by public scrutiny. Leading The Bachelor proved particularly challenging as he secretly grappled with his sexuality. He found a strange comfort in hiding his identity, a skill honed during his football career and upbringing.

His relationship with Cassie Randolph following The Bachelor ended in heartbreak and legal issues. Randolph obtained a temporary restraining order against Underwood, alleging stalking and harassment. The lawsuit was later withdrawn after a private agreement. This period, preceding his public coming out on Good Morning America in 2021, remained a sensitive topic for Underwood, who initially requested it be off-limits during discussions about The Traitors.

Facing the Past and Embracing the Future

Underwood agreed to participate in The Traitors with the understanding that his past wouldn’t be a focal point. “I met with production. I met with Peacock. I was like, ‘I’m down to do this,’ because this show is about strategy. It is about the game. It is about traitors. It is not personal,” he explains. However, he acknowledges that public perception of his “lowest point” doesn’t reflect the person he is today.

He emphasizes the significant personal growth he’s undergone since 2020, including therapy and a commitment to accountability. He’s now married to Jordan C. Brown and is a father via surrogacy. “I’m proud of who I’ve become. I’m proud of the man that I am. I’m proud of the husband that I am. I’m proud of the father that I am,” he states.

The Importance of Forgiveness and Representation

Underwood recognizes that not everyone will forgive his past actions. However, he finds solace in the support of those closest to him and the positive impact he’s had on others. He’s received messages from individuals who credit his story with helping them come to terms with their own sexuality. He believes his platform allows him to represent closeted gay men, particularly in conservative communities, and prevent others from making the same mistakes he did.

He acknowledges the scrutiny surrounding his continued presence on television, but emphasizes the rigorous vetting process and his commitment to using his platform for good. He even defends his controversial banquet outfit, receiving a nod of approval from Alan Cumming. Ultimately, Colton Underwood’s story is one of transformation, accountability, and the ongoing pursuit of authenticity.
