Amy Allen: From Maine Roots to Grammy Glory

When Amy Allen picked up the guitar as a teenager, she didn’t just learn to play songs – she began to write them. Carter Logan, of the Maine band Jerks of Grass and Allen’s former guitar teacher, recalls, “She kept writing these songs that were pretty darn good. Her talent was already evident. For her senior project, she recorded her songs.” Today, Allen is one of the most sought-after songwriters in the music industry, crafting hits for pop icons like Sabrina Carpenter, Selena Gomez, Olivia Rodrigo, and Harry Styles.

A Rising Star from Greater Portland

Musicians and friends who knew Allen growing up in Greater Portland aren’t surprised by her success, though the scale of it is astonishing. A graduate of Waynflete School in Portland (2010) and raised in Windham, Allen’s talent blossomed early. She’s already secured one Songwriter of the Year Grammy award and boasts three nominations in the four years the award has existed.

“It’s almost impossible to get to the level she’s at,” says Charlie Gaylord, a Kennebunk-based music producer who worked with Allen early in her career. “It’s a combination of being super talented and working really hard.”

Grammy Recognition and a Packed Schedule

The 2024 Grammy Awards saw Allen nominated for Songwriter of the Year, recognizing her contributions to a remarkable body of work. Her success is built on co-writing songs with other artists and writers, including hits for Carpenter, Leon Bridges, Rodrigo, and Justin Timberlake. This year, Allen is a co-writer on every song on Carpenter’s acclaimed album, “Man’s Best Friend.”

Beyond that, her songwriting credits include tracks performed by Jessie Murph, Tate McRae, Jon Bellion, Shaboozy, and Sierra Ferrell. Allen is also in contention for two additional Grammys: “APT.” by ROSE´ and Bruno Mars, and “Manchild” by Carpenter are nominated for Song of the Year, while “Man’s Best Friend” is up for Album of the Year – awards that also recognize the songwriter.

Maine Roots and Early Influences

Despite her current base in Los Angeles, Allen frequently speaks about her Maine upbringing and the origins of her passion for music. “The child in me that was starting writing songs when I was little in Maine on my bed is screaming and crying and laughing at the absurdity of this moment,” she shared during her 2023 Grammy acceptance speech.

Allen credits several Mainers with nurturing her talent, including Carter Logan, who gave her early performance opportunities with Jerks of Grass, and Jonathan Wyman, a Maine-based producer who produced her first album. Wyman recalls being immediately impressed by Allen’s potential, comparing her to fellow Maine native and Grammy winner Ray LaMontagne.

From Bands to Pop Charts

Allen’s musical journey began in earnest in Windham, where she joined her sister’s band, No U Turn, on bass at age 10, and started writing her own songs. She briefly attended Boston College before pursuing music at Berklee Music School, where she formed the band Amy and the Engine. After graduating, she moved to New York and then Los Angeles, steadily building her reputation as a hit songwriter.

By 2019, she had already co-written Selena Gomez’s “Back to You” and Halsey’s chart-topping “Without Me.” Bonnie Hayes, a former director of Berklee’s songwriting program, describes Allen as a naturally gifted artist who writes with confidence and authenticity.

A Solo Album and Continued Creativity

Alongside her work with other artists, Allen continues to pursue her own musical vision. In September 2024, she released her solo album, “Amy Allen,” a collection of songs written and performed over several years. She expressed her hope that the album would resonate with listeners, offering a glimpse into her personal experiences and emotions.
