Will Forte’s Mom is Primed for Her Close-Up
Will Forte recently shared an exciting update on his upcoming sketch comedy show starring his 82-year-old mother, Patti, during an appearance on ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!. The show, currently titled Will Forte’s Mom Has a Sketch Show, has been a passion project for the Saturday Night Live alum for years.
The Inspiration Behind the Show
Forte first teased the idea back in 2021 on the Smartless podcast, and provided another update in October on The Daily Beast’s Last Laugh podcast. He recounted how, during his time on SNL (2002-2010), his mother and her friend Carol would frequently pitch sketch ideas. While often… unconventional, these pitches sparked an idea.
“They were, to put it kindly, not really the kind of ideas that I would really do,” Forte explained to Kimmel. “So I would always just say, ‘Mom, maybe we save it for The Patti Forte Sketch Show.’ Then over the years I was like, I’ve got to do that show.”
What to Expect from Will Forte’s Mom Has a Sketch Show
The show will uniquely document Patti and Carol’s creative process – from developing and writing material to rehearsing and ultimately performing the sketches. Forte describes the experience as “insanely fun,” emphasizing the duo’s lack of formal training.
“They have no acting experience, no writing experience. They’re just magical people. But, like, they kind of have no business being in this position,” Forte joked.
Currently in post-production, the show promises a delightful blend of amateur enthusiasm and comedic brilliance. Forte shared a clip from a character workshop featuring himself, fellow SNL alum Vanessa Bayer, and the dynamic duo of Patti and Carol (both 82). The sketches themselves will feature a roster of impressive guest performers, including Forte’s “buddies from SNL” – identities he’s keeping under wraps for now.
Beyond the Sketch Show: Forte’s Latest Role
Forte is also currently starring in Sunny Nights, a dark comedy series that recently debuted on Hulu. He plays Martin, a straight-laced character who partners with his free-spirited sister Vicky (D’Arcy Carden of The Good Place) to launch a spray tan business in Sydney, Australia, quickly finding themselves embroiled in the city’s criminal underworld. You can learn more about the show on Hulu’s website.
It’s a busy time for Will Forte, and audiences are eagerly anticipating both the darkly comedic world of Sunny Nights and the heartwarming, hilarious potential of Will Forte’s Mom Has a Sketch Show.
