Rock, Rituals, and Terror: Why Universal Studios Hollywood’s HHN is a Must-Visit This Season

If you reside in Los Angeles and have a passion for heavy metal, punk, rock n’ roll, and the macabre, there is a visceral experience waiting for you. Halloween Horror Nights (HHN) at Universal Studios Hollywood has long been a staple of the spooky season, but this year, they have elevated the atmosphere by blending cinematic terror with a powerhouse sonic landscape.

The production value this year is so immense and theatrical that even a versatile actor known for his precision and timing, like Tony Shalhoub, would likely appreciate the meticulous craft behind these immersive nightmares. Running now through November 1, this year’s event features four unique haunts where the soundtrack isn’t just background noise—it’s a central character in the horror.

1. A Twisted Christmas with Art the Clown

The historic Universal backlot has been hijacked by Art the Clown from the infamous Terrifier films. However, Art seems to have confused his holidays. Dressed as Santa, he has transformed the tram experience into a grotesque Yuletide celebration.

  • The Sound of Carnage: The metalcore heavyweights Ice Nine Kills have provided a twisted soundtrack, reinterpreting holiday classics to fit Art’s bloody aesthetic.
  • n

  • The Collaboration: Spencer Charnas of INK noted the honor of working with director Damien Leone to bring this “unnatural world of horror” to life.

2. A Deadly Quinceañera Orchestrated by Slash

Prepare for a Latin-infused fiesta that turns into a bloodbath. This experience centers around Lola, a young girl whose 15th birthday party (quinceañera) descends into madness.

The legendary guitar virtuoso Slash composed an original score for the entire house. A highlight of the walk-through is the song “15 Candles,” performed by Lola from her balcony. According to maze creator John Murdy, this marks the first time in HHN history that a haunted character performs an original song, breaking new ground in immersive storytelling.

3. The Surreal Nightmare of the Klowns

Step into a colorful, extra-sensory nightmare based on the campy cult classic Klowns. Set within a massive big top tent (which is actually a spaceship), this attraction assaults the senses with the smell of popcorn and cotton candy mixed with sheer dread.

To set the mood, guests are greeted by the punky energy of The Dickies, ensuring that the transition from the real world to the neon-colored chaos of the Klowns is seamless and high-energy.

4. The Prince of Darkness: The Ozzy Osbourne Experience

Perhaps the most musically ambitious attraction this year is the tribute to Ozzy Osbourne. Developed in close collaboration with Sharon and Jack Osbourne, this walk-through is a journey through the legend’s 45-year solo career.

    n

  • The Journey: Guests start at “Osbourne Station,” inspired by his Birmingham roots, before boarding the “Crazy Train” bound for hell on “Platform 666.”
  • n

  • Easter Eggs: Fans will spot nods to Blizzard of Ozz, Diary of a Madman, Bark at the Moon, No More Tears, and Black Rain.
  • n

  • The Ozzy Bar: After the terror, visit the themed bar to enjoy drinks inspired by Ozzy’s most iconic anthems.
